Position Overview


Curriculum and Assessment Development Faculty work collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts and cross-departmental stakeholders in the design, development, and on-time delivery of high-quality online assessments and learning experiences. Faculty in this role will promote equitable learner assessment strategies advancing the use of formative assessments, digital portfolios, summative assessments, authentic assessments, and emerging technology supported tools that bring clarity and transparency to the learner journey. The incumbent will be an active participant in decisions related to writing measurable competencies, competency to assessment alignment, learning design, ensuring that experiences meet the specifications of each program and adhere to institutional expectations for rigor, quality, scalability, and the success needs of our students, faculty, and student support staff. The incumbent will facilitate design and development workshops using industry best practices to ensure assessment validity and reliability.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities


The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.

  • Assessment development work is situational and highly complex, requiring analysis and evaluation of learner responses to assessment task prompts to achieve a secure, valid and reliable determination of competencies for programs and/or credit for prior learning. 
  • Using a backwards design approach, work with SMEs to design high-quality and valid assessments to evaluate evidence of learning for both formative and summative performances.
  • Engage in ongoing quality reviews and participate in data-informed assessments of learning experiences to identify areas of improvement in instructional clarity, engagement, and outcome-driven learning pathways.
  • Determine procedures in scoring work and craft helpful, robust and personalized feedback to support adult learners in developing competency, progressing with their program and preparing learners for industry certification (when applicable).
  • Take initiative and act independently in completing performance assessment evaluations consistent with standard practices and policies and our commitment to adult learners.
  • Work hand-in-hand with Instructional Designer for program improvement and the development of new programs.
  • Propose or collaborate on new and emerging methods, procedures and technologies for high quality assessment support.
  • Value learner differences and design with a differentiation mindset for knowledge construction throughout all areas of competency-based online learning.
  • Request and evaluate disaggregated data and continually evaluate and review data to inform the continuous improvement of the experience and tools.
  • Transparently share and provide access to disaggregated progress and completion data.
  • Transparently share how evidence and research of learner outcomes are incorporated into the design, implementation and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Seek out and incorporate evidence from equity-centered research and practitioners
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and experience working to further cultural competency in an organization and create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
  • Establish a model for training and professional development education for faculty and all other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop assessment practices including those that promote a culture of academic integrity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Strong understanding, acceptance and adherence to the tenets of competency-based education.
  • A drive to build quality assessments for online asynchronous competency-based courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to discern evidence of competency within learner submissions.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues to ensure validity and reliability of evaluation across multiple raters.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, solve emergent technical problems, and share learnings and suggestions with a team to come to a quick, value-driven solution.
  • Current, comprehensive knowledge of instructional design and learning theory.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and history of positive results achieved collaboratively.
  • Experience with UDL, ADA, and copyright compliance.
  • Experience with existing quality standards for course design.
  • Experience with Agile development or rapid prototyping.
  • Commitment to adding value to the team through efficiency and lean, iterative development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a growth mindset related to assessment, technology, and personal growth
  • Advanced skills in planning, organizing, and self-management.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented work approach working in a remote environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff and faculty.
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in technology-driven document and collaboration tools, including but not limited to Google Suite, Slack, Asana, and web conferencing and cloud-based tools.



Minimum Qualifications


  • Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, Adult Education, or a relevant field
  • Four or more years of assessment design experience.
  • Experience in online learning theories and technologies.
  • Experience with data-informed curriculum design.
  • Competency in LMS systems and assessment delivery systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Strut, Smart Author, Brightspace, Moodle, etc.



Preferred Qualifications


  • Background in learner experience design.
  • Experience in developing innovative assessments.
  • Experience evaluating student learning outcomes.
  • Expertise in competency-based learning.
  • Teaching and learning experience.



Working Conditions and Travel


  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in-person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
