Position Focus:
Yale School of Medicine is seeking an innovative, enthusiastic and knowledgeable director of admissions to lead us forward in our mission: someone who is eager to re-envision how we develop connections with promising students, to share our enthusiasm for the Yale System of medical education, and to meaningfully engage with prospective students during the interviewing and selection process.

The mission of the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Office of Admissions is to admit a diverse class of outstanding students who show great promise for becoming creative leaders in medicine and science. The unique Yale System of medical education provides students with the flexibility and freedom to pursue in-depth topics that fascinate them and to take the time that is required to develop deep understanding. The Office of Admissions seeks students who are motivated, curious, and compassionate, willing to take responsibility for their own learning within a community of learners dedicated to each other, their patients, and society. Our hope is for students to be as intrigued and excited about YSM as we are about them.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, the director of admissions is the leader of the admissions team within the Office of Education at YSM The director is responsible for the planning, coordination and management of YSM's admission and recruitment activities. The director develops and implements innovative strategies to build a diverse and talented applicant pool, participates in the evaluation of candidates for admission, and provides leadership to the committees during the interviewing and selection process.

The director also leads the evaluation of the outcomes of the admissions process, and along with YSM leadership and the admissions committees, develops strategies for improvement. The director engages with current medical students and faculty on the admissions committees; interprets and presents enrollment trends and the medical school admissions landscape to key audiences; contributes to or leads communications and marketing initiatives; manages Slate/AMP software and other relevant technical platforms; leads the student ambassador program; and mentors and develops the office's professional and administrative staff.

The position requires a high degree of autonomy but also the ability to work in close collaboration with YSM senior physician leadership, academic and administrative stakeholders, and medical education staff to support a comprehensive state of the art approach to admissions. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, creative, and knowledgeable about successful data-driven admissions and marketing strategies as well as a collaborative team leader who values the contributions of every team member.

Essential Duties:
1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, responsiveness and professionalism. Exceptional oral and written communication skills required to interact effectively with a range of internal and external constituencies. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and public relations skills with the ability to develop strong professional relationships.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to work well with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff. Strong organizational and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability supervising staff and leading teams and providing oversight of events.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated strong analytical and technical skills, including ability to work with advanced MS Office, complex databases and spreadsheets. Expert level data analysis skills in Excel.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee admissions efforts.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced and changing environment and to lead with a positive and can-do attitude that supports the mission of the school.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in admissions and/or education at the graduate or professional school level. Our online admissions application software is customized for our use. It is preferred that candidates have a minimum experience in Information Technology of 2 years with respect to software development cycles and experience with software testing.
