Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College seeks full-time Academic Advisors (State Title: Academic Advisor) who will support undergraduate students in both face-to-face and online learning environments to create strong, ongoing relationships that positively influence student persistence and retention.

These positions will report directly to an academic dean in the School of Business or the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, depending on the prospective employee's background and expertise. One successful candidate will be located at our Fort Drum unit, and any remaining positions may be located at our locations in Staten Island, Selden, Brooklyn, Saratoga Springs, or Rochester.

Dedication to developing innovative ways to reach and engage students while providing holistic student development and support is essential to these positions. The selected incumbents must demonstrate knowledge of academic advisement, a commitment to student service, experience with programming at the college level, and have a strong familiarity working with adults, specifically non-traditional learners, and those from diverse backgrounds.

Essential Functions

At SUNY Empire, Academic Advisors manage an active caseload of students through all phases of the college experience from orientation to graduation. Advisors work closely with students to develop associate and bachelor's degree programs that are built around a student's academic, professional, and intellectual goals. Often, SUNY Empire students enroll with previous courses or learning from previous colleges and/or other creditable prior college-level learning. The successful candidates will review, plan and balance a student's academic opportunities with college requirements, mentoring students through the degree planning and prior learning assessment processes, which may include teaching an online section of an Educational Planning course. Coordination of mentoring and advising approaches within the assigned school, in collaboration with assessment staff, faculty mentors, and the dean is expected.

The advisor is a student's main point of a contact and actively responds to student questions, proactively encourages consistent course registrations, and liaises with other collegewide departments to ensure seamless academic service. An effective advisor will identify and address student concerns, assist with referrals for support services, and help to investigate and resolve administrative academic questions and issues as needed.

In addition, a portion of the responsibilities associated with these positions will include working as part of an advising team to staff the college's Advising Center and working with the Office of Enrollment Management to conduct degree forecasting and other pre-enrollment advising functions.
