Veterinary Technician

Rehabilitation

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Veterinary Technician in Rehabilitation.  The primary purpose of this position is to provide patient care in the Small Animal Rehabilitation service by making patient assessments, preparing patients for exams or treatments, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, and recording patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations.  Position administers medicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medical equipment. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents.  Depending on qualifications of the successful candidate, position will begin as a Veterinary Technician I, II, or Senior Veterinary Technician I.  More responsibilities will be expected of those hired in at a more advanced level.



Qualifications
Typical Responsibilities:

Provides entry-level patient care by performing treatments and procedures as prescribed by the rehabilitation clinician. Implements physical rehabilitation protocols for orthopedic and neurological post-operative patients. Instructs owners regarding at-home exercises. Implements fitness and weight loss protocols for performance and companion animals. Collects samples and orders diagnostic tests for patients. Sedates and monitors patients.

Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Participates in teaching rounds with students on various rehabilitation technologies.

Manages supplies, equipment, and inventory.  Works with others in the service in the maintenance of rehabilitation equipment (Pool water quality, Underwater Treadmill, Balance Boards and Physiorolls, Therapy Bands, Therapeutic Exercise Equipment).

Minimum Qualifications:

Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology.  Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program in Veterinary Technology.  Must have a Veterinary Technician license and must obtain a Tennessee license within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Veterinary Technician II: 6 months of experience in a veterinary medical center or one year in a private veterinary practice. Experience as a veterinary technician working with post-surgical neurology and orthopedic patients.

Senior Veterinary Technician I: Three years of experience in a veterinary medical center or five years in private veterinary practice. Experience as a veterinary technician working with post-surgical neurology and orthopedic patients.
