Position Summary


The School of Education aims to facilitate the development of educated teachers who demonstrate the willingness and capacity to empower students, and to exercise informed choices in a global society. The program is committed to promoting social justice, embracing diversity and inclusion, and enhancing teaching and learning through emerging technologies. Our rigorous program ensures that students have the ability to teach and reinforce their practices through numerous teaching projects and student teaching. Classrooms are equipped with technology and resources to ensure our students are trained to integrate technology in teaching. The School of Education is fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Livingstone College is seeking an Adjunct Professor of Education beginning the Fall 2022 semester to teach various courses in the traditional undergraduate programs in Education.  Qualified candidates will hold a terminal degree in elementary education from an institutionally accredited university or equivalent. Teaching experience in the P-6 school setting is required. Experience teaching and/or supervising in a college or university setting is preferred and experience as a subject specialist (e.g., reading/math coach) or special educator is preferred. Generalist teaching responsibilities will be in teacher preparation (foundations, P-6 methodology, and field/clinical supervision). The successful applicant will be expected to maintain an applied research agenda, engage in school partnership endeavors, support CAEP assessment processes, and participate in various service activities in the department, school and larger university.  

A typical adjunct teaching load consists of 1-3 three-hour classes per semester. Job duties also include academic advising of students, active participation in college committees, working as a team member in the academic department or division the major resides, working collaboratively with other faculty and the college administration, active involvement in recruiting activities for new students, and participation in and contribution to the general college community.  Position may require non-standard work hours (nights and weekends).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Teaching and oversite of courses in the undergraduate elementary education program, including methods for literacy, science, mathematics, and social studies;
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with local schools;
  • Collaborate within the school and across campus to strengthen programs;
  • Administer synchronous instruction utilizing various teaching strategies that will be inclusive for all learners;
  • Awareness and knowledge of planning and instructing diverse populations of students and using inclusive practices in the content areas;
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in using technology in instruction, particularly in online and/or hybrid settings;
  • Building school-university partnerships;
  • Involvement in professional educational organizations at the local, state, or national levels;
  • Prepare course outlines and syllabi in accordance with program standards, and in collaboration with the program chairperson;
  • Utilizing effective teaching and learning practices such as presentations, demonstrations, class discussion, guest speakers, and other appropriate modes of educational delivery;
  • Use Blackboard as an instructional aide to teach, assess student performance, and post student grades;
  • Advise and register students, and track student progress and performance;
  • Evaluate student progress, such as attendance and grades, in a timely manner;
  • Work collaboratively with campus-wide services on student retention;
  • Assist students with enrollment related challenges or issues;
  • Assess course outcomes; student satisfaction, student retention and use results to improve program quality;
  • Attend required meetings;
  • Collaborate with the campus community and serve on campus-wide committees;
  •  Participate in professional organizations and provide community service;
  • Work flexible hours, evenings and weekends as needed for Institution events;
  • Education/ Experience


  • Master’s degree in Elementary Education;
  • Doctorate degree in Education, with emphasis on Elementary Education preferred;
  • Special education certification is a plus;
  • A minimum of three years successful teaching experience in higher education preferred;
  • Evidence of successful teaching in undergraduate elementary education courses;
  • Five years (minimum) of public school teaching in grades K-6;
  • Appropriate teaching licensure/certification;
  • Experience working with underserved and underrepresented learners;
  • Ability to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination;
  • Successful experience with traditional in-person classes, and hybrid/online instruction;
  • Experience teaching students with various learning disabilities;
  • Curriculum/program development; 
  • Academic advising and degree auditing;
  • Other skills and abilities include strong written and oral communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Must be driven by the following values:  Excellent Customer (Student) Service, Creativity, Quality, and Teamwork.

    Our History

    Livingstone College was originally founded in 1879 as Zion Wesley Institute by a group of African Methodist Episcopal Zion ministers for the purpose of training ministers in Concord, in Cabarrus County, N.C. After three brief sessions, directed by Principals Bishop C. R. Harris and Professor A.S. Richardson, Zion Wesley Institute was closed. In 1881, Dr. Joseph Charles Price and Bishop J. W. Hood changed their roles from delegates to the Ecumenical Conference to fund-raisers, with a sole purpose of re-establishing Zion Wesley Institute.


    Eventually, the Rowan County Town of Salisbury, just 20 miles northeast of Concord, offered Zion Wesley Institute Board of Trustees a generous $1,000 donation and an invitation to relocate the institution to Salisbury. The trustees accepted both gifts, and the College re-opened in Salisbury in 1882 on J. M. Gray’s farm, called Delta Grove, which consisted of one building and 40 acres. Besides moving from Concord to Salisbury, the College also changed its name, becoming Livingstone College, in honor of David Livingstone, a British Christian missionary, philanthropist and African Explorer. Dr. Price, the founder of Livingstone College, became its first president and served from 1882 to 1893.


    Holistic Learning:

    Livingstone College offers a Holistic Learning Environment that is designed to address the needs of a diverse student population. As a church-affiliated institution, Livingstone College seeks to attract professionals who are committed to supporting and fostering such principles.
