    SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Provide group and individual counseling and psychotherapy to students. Provide psychoeducational workshops, presentations and training programs. Responsible for strengthening clinical, outreach and training experiences within the department and acts as a liaison to other campus offices providing services to historically marginalized, oppressed and underrepresented groups. Supervise, train and evaluate trainees/interns. Consult with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and outside medical and mental health professionals. Provide crisis intervention. Follow the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

    EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provides culturally-informed care, including individual and group therapy and outreach to undergraduate, graduate and international students with an emphasis on promoting mental health of students from culturally marginalized and underrepresented groups.
    • Facilitates support and personal growth groups.
    • Initiates and implements culturally-sensitive outreach programs, presentations and workshops to meet special interests and developmental needs of students.
    • Assists with selection, training, supervision, back-up coverage and evaluation of doctoral and masters-level trainees/interns.
    • Serves as a professional consultant to faculty, administrators, staff and student groups on matters related to students’ well-being or the design and implementation of strategies for making the campus environment conducive to interpersonal learning and personal growth.
    • Serves as a professional consultant to students’ parents, outside agencies and hospitals, and to students’ other health care providers.
    • Serves as referral resource to community mental health and social services providers for faculty, staff and students.
    • Consults and assists in various skill training programs for counseling center trainees, residence hall advisors, orientation leaders, and other university employees.
    • Covers assigned Urgent Care periods, intake appointments and crisis intervention.
    • Contributes to staff in-service training and didactic training with a focus on multi-cultural issues, especially as related to culturally marginalized and underrepresented groups.
    • Assumes administrative duties as required by the Director.
    • Serves on university committees and work groups as assigned.
    • Performs other duties as required by the Director.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – PSYCHOLOGIST-LEVEL:

    EDUCATION: Ph.D., Ed.D., or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology

    EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) in a college or university counseling center, clinical experience including internship, volunteer and co-op to include experience providing culturally-informed clinical services to diverse and underrepresented populations, including students of color, international students and LGBTQIA students.

    Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in a clinical or educational setting. Experience with crisis management for psychiatric emergencies.

    OTHER: Licensed in Massachusetts as a psychologist. (Licensure as psychologist in another state considered acceptable at time of hire. Massachusetts license must be obtained within 12 months.) Available for weekend/evening hours as required and emergencies as needed. May need to travel locally.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – PSYCHOTHERAPIST-LEVEL:

    EDUCATION: Masters of Social Work

    EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated experience (over 3 years) in a college or university counseling center, clinical experience including internship, volunteer and co-op to include experience providing culturally-informed clinical services to diverse and underrepresented populations, including students of color, international students and LGBTQIA students.

    Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in a clinical or educational setting. Experience with crisis management for psychiatric emergencies.

    OTHER: Possession of license or license-eligible as an independent Social Worker (LICSW) in Massachusetts. Available for weekend/evening hours as required and emergencies as needed. May need to travel locally

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Thorough knowledge of theories and principles related to providing multi-culturally informed psychological care.
    • Thorough knowledge of multiple systems of psychotherapy applied to developmental needs and diversity concerns in a university setting.
    • Thorough knowledge of the developmental issues of 17 to 25-year-olds.
    • Familiarity and comfort with multiple psychotherapeutic approaches, allowing for a flexible and effective intervention for a broad range of students in a diverse university setting.
    • Thorough knowledge of mental illness and diagnostic categories.
    • Ability to provide accurate diagnostic evaluations and appropriate psychiatric referrals.
    • Crisis intervention skills.
    • Sufficient knowledge and experience to supervise masters and doctoral level interns.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as evidenced by a history of continuing education, community involvement, outreach, or research devoted to these topics.
    • Familiarity with medications used to treat depression, anxiety and attention deficit disorder.
    • Ability to instruct others in psychological theory and technique, especially as it pertains to culturally-informed care.
    • Ability to instruct others in an array of self-management skills.
    • Ability to adhere to professional ethical code of conduct.
    • Ability to utilize clinical supervision and consultation appropriately.
    • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with other offices and outside agencies.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Thorough knowledge of developmental theories of personal and group psychotherapy.
  • Ability to provide accurate diagnostic evaluations and appropriate psychiatric referrals.
  • Current knowledge of psychotropic medications and their impact on diverse populations.
