Summary of Duties:

The Executive Writer will support, shape, and drive the multifaceted communications needs of the Provost and WSU Pullman Chancellor in a manner that reinforces the brand, vision and strategy and elevates the profile and reputation of WSU. Reporting to the Chief of Staff with a dotted line reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Executive Writer will develop, research, write, edit, and coordinate complex original content for use in multiple communication media to promote and/or inform target audiences about WSU’s academic enterprise and the WSU Pullman campus. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as editor and create content for the weekly WSU Pullman newsletter, and effectively tell the WSU Pullman story in narrative fashion.

  • Serve as the marketing writer for the WSU Pullman events team.

  • Prepare content for and update the WSU Pullman and Provost’s website.

  • Research, craft, and support communication for the Provost and WSU Pullman Chancellor for both internal and external audiences. Deliverables will include correspondence, formal speeches/scripts, reports, presentations, editorial content, social media posts, and collateral material.

  • Contribute ideas and collaborate with University Marketing and Communications to develop topics, themes, and messaging points based on an understanding of institutional priorities, issues, and opportunities, as well as local and national trends in higher education.

  • Partner closely with the Provost/Chancellor’s leadership and administrative teams, University Marketing and Communications, communications colleagues, and other key stakeholders to develop, implement and support a communications strategy which amplifies the Provost/Chancellor’s profile and thought leadership, supports the achievement of evolving business priorities and goals, and ensures mutual alignment with institutional messages and themes.

  • Discreetly and expertly handle sensitive or confidential assignments and exercise sound editorial judgment.

  • Learn, master, and consistently integrate the tone, tenor, and style of communications from the Office of the Provost/WSU Pullman Chancellor.

  • As assigned, serve on system-wide communications committees as the Provost and WSU Pullman Chancellor’s representative.

  • Edit and/or contribute to articles, news releases, newsletters, reports, brochures, videos, photos, web content, and other communications materials for external and internal audiences in collaboration with partners across the WSU system.

  • Build and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues throughout the University to facilitate the sharing of content across various channels and platforms and to coordinate timing of message delivery.

  • Support internal communications priorities to ensure that all faculty, staff and students have meaningful opportunities to learn about key institutional accomplishments and priorities.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing or other relevant field AND either two (2) years of professional experience in print OR broadcast news media, public relations, marketing including the use of electronic media or two (2) years of other relevant professional experience.

  • Experience writing/producing a variety of deliverables, such as press releases, features, and executive correspondence.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel programs.

  • Experience with ghostwriting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion communications.

  • Experience in higher education.

  • Experience working in a large, complex organization.

  • Evidence of creative, conceptual thinking and the ability to take the conceptual and make it a reality.

  • Background in media and/or public information industries.

  • Five (5) years of experience in print or broadcast news media, public relations, and/or marketing.

  • Experience with WordPress or similar content management system.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
