Summary of Duties:

The function of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) is to develop, facilitate, support, and/or administer system-wide programs in partnership with the US Department of Energy national laboratories, other federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), and similar major national and international research centers, publicly or privately funded. These efforts should focus on the development of interdisciplinary teams that enable WSU to compete and secure large grants, public-private partnerships, and coalitions with related institutions and communities.

The AVC will be responsible for development and oversight of the overall portfolio of strategic partnership areas of mutual interest to WSU and the partnering institutions, including energy innovation, national security, and earth/biological systems. This will include management of selected major programs as determined by the AVC working in coordination with Chancellors, Deans, and the VCR as appropriate.

In their oversight role, the AVC will also serve as the university principal spokesperson on relevant technical programs while implementing and maintaining a unified program of coordination and communication for internal and external constituents. Internal constituents include faculty and administrators from relevant campuses, colleges, schools, and departments as well as research institutes, centers, and laboratories.

In addition, this position will be responsible for coordinating and engaging institutional leadership; the primary offices involved in these matters include the Office of the Provost, the WSU Chancellors and Deans, the Office of External Affairs & Government Relations, and the Office of Corporate Relations; other offices and divisions will be involved as appropriate. The AVC will also provide consultation and support to the Office of Research Advancement and Partnerships and other Office of Research units as needed.

The AVC will be expected to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion and other core values and beliefs in the University’s Strategic Plan and execute the duties of the position accordingly. This is a system-wide position.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least (2) two years of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment.

  • Demonstrated exceptional ability to communicate in an informative and diplomatic manner orally – by phone or in person – with faculty, department administrators, and agency personnel, on an individual basis or in groups.

  • Demonstrated exceptional ability to write grammatically correct, clear, concise, and accurate business correspondence (memos, letters, policies, and procedures).

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly review and accurately analyze complex documents.

  • Demonstrated broad-based knowledge of national laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a related area.

  • Experience with diverse energy resources and knowledge the areas of WSU’s research strengths in water resources, environment, agriculture, policy and economics.

Monthly Salary: $14,500 - $16,667. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
