Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in medical illustration and experience in this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Position Summary:

This position is a highly complex medical illustrator position in a fast-paced
technology intensive department. The person in this position will have four primary responsibilities. The person’s primary responsibility is to create anatomical, pathological, and surgical illustrations, 3-D models and animations, and other media that can be used to communicate biomedical concepts within veterinary and undergraduate science curricula. This requires a strong knowledge of science, anatomy and physiology, typically obtained by graduating from an accredited medical illustration training program, post-graduate experience in this type of work, and the use of specialized software to design and produce a range of educational materials. The production of these materials requires excellent artistic skills and knowledge of graphic presentation techniques. The secondary responsibility will be to produce accurate models suitable for incorporation into augmented, mixed and virtual reality experiences. The third responsibility will be production of diagrams, logos, scientific posters and brochures for use by faculty members and departments within the university. Finally, the person in this position will share the responsibility for printing large format scientific posters submitted by students and faculty members to the unit. The person in this position will interact on a routine basis with faculty members, work under the general direction of the Director of Educational Resources, and function with independence on technical assignments. Work is reviewed through periodic conferences and the observation of results.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Proficiency in current technologies and specialized software used to create illustrations, 3-D models, animations, and present these to scientific audiences such as: Cinema 4D, Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, iBooks Author, and After Effects.

Knowledge of anatomy, pathology and surgery and the major branches of medical sciences.

Effective graphics arts skills, and the ability to produce both digital and printed materials that are aesthetically pleasing and informative.

Ability to portray accurately and in detail medical subjects for display or reproduction.

*Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work flow while providing excellent work under tight deadlines.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Research and render 2D & 3D medical illustrations (i.e. scientific, surgical, anatomical, physiological, histological, etc.) for numerous modes of communication including print, projection, and digital media. Assist clients in tailoring visual messages to facilitate clear communication with their target audience. Advise clients as to the best method and media for communicating within their budget and time frame.

Meet directly with CVM faculty and other clients to create 2D and 3D animations for computer aided instruction, video, web site, and digital projection of anatomical structures, scientificprocedures, and pathological lesions. Production includes: storyboarding, script writing, research, rendering, animation of graphics, and digital editing of animations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Logo, web and publication design. Design and coordinate assigned College publications such as the VMES annual report, eBooks, iBooks. Design, production, and delivery of logos (static or animated) for College programs such as symposia. Design drawings, charts, and diagrams for publication in professional journals, large format posters, brochures and for use in lectures and demonstrations. Production and delivery of iBook/ePub versions of class notes used in the professional instructional program.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Functions as project lead or team member in the coordination and completion of complex projects. Meet directly with clients and ERC team members in estimating and scheduling production with specific checkpoints for incoming work. Define incoming projects by noting client objectives, rendering media, number of illustrations or animation sequences, and estimated completion time for each phase of production. Invoice work after completion.
