The assistant dean for diversity, equity and inclusion is responsible for leading efforts to define, assess, and cultivate diversity within all aspects of the college. The assistant dean informs senior leadership and others on issues that accomplish the college’s strategic priorities and ameliorates issues that may challenge creating an inclusive culture. The desired culture supports a multicultural community to reach their full potential, so it contributes to creating a profession that solves global societal issues and serves the needs of a diverse population.

As the Chief Diversity Officer for the college, they provide leadership related to diversity issues, and work to infuse an understanding of these issues throughout the organization. The successful candidate is expected to plan, develop, and implement college-wide diversity intercultural competency learning programs, events, and activities such as social justice education training and intercultural sensitivity training. The successful candidate also will provide consultation and resource support for diversity, equity, and inclusion for individuals and groups within the college community and will plan and manage budgets for diversity initiatives. The successful candidate will ensure that the organization complies with all university policies related to equity and inclusion and that those activities are consistent with the college’s strategic imperatives. The successful candidate will seek to enhance diversity across the college and must be able to form consultative and productive relationships. This individual should also be innovative, and committed to adding value to the organization and the communities it serves.

The assistant dean must possess the ability to interact positively with a diverse population. They must have a demonstrated ability to develop and enthusiastically implement efforts to foster diversity and inclusivity, to work independently and think creatively, as well as to develop and meet performance measures for projects. The successful candidate must have the ability to: work with a wide set of constituents, including faculty, staff, alumni, students and the families of potential student candidates; have excellent oral and written communication skills; be able to effectively engage small groups and large audiences; and be skilled in teamwork development and group facilitation. The minimum qualifications include the MS degree (Doctoral degree preferred) with 6-years of experience.  

Specifically the scope of work includes:

Recruit and retain a diverse undergraduate, graduate and professional student population

Develop strategic initiatives and goals to enhance student diversity in the College of Veterinary Medicine with support and cooperation from academic leadership of the college, the Office of Student Services, Office of Engagement and others in the college. Collaborate with recruitment personnel to coordinate recruitment and outreach initiatives that will focus on multicultural students that include outreach experiences at regional campuses and colleges/universities with significant populations of multicultural students. Identify and visit target schools (elementary, junior and high school) that will help to promote future diversity in student applicant pool.

In cooperation with the Office of the Dean and the Office of Student Services, participate in the holistic admissions process and the holistic scholarship process.

 
Plan, develop and implement activities that expand the multicultural experiences, development and success of all students in the college.

Serve as a resource, mentor and advisor to students of the college; act on behalf of students and in concert with students to build cohesive academic and professional experiences that embrace the varieties of student, faculty and staff experiences and perspectives

Promote diversity in the College faculty and staff

Provide leadership in organizing and delivering diversity initiatives and implementing inclusion strategies within the college. Work with faculty and staff to foster an inclusive climate for diversity in the college. Serve as a resource for faculty and staff seeking to incorporate diversity into their courses.

Facilitate recruiting efforts to help ensure a diverse applicant pool for faculty and staff positions. Diversity Liaison
Serve as the college liaison for campus diversity initiatives. Build strong connections with related campus representatives and Offices. Engage in cooperative efforts with other university faculty, staff, and units to enhance diversity efforts at the university.

Engage with alumni and friends of the College of Veterinary Medicine in cooperation with the Purdue for Life Foundation and others to foster college and industry environment that supports diversity.

Prepare proposals and other requests for financial support to federal, private and corporate entities in order to secure funding for multicultural program needs and diversity initiatives within the college.
Cooperate with the Director of Development and the Director of Alumni Relations as appropriate. Prepare and monitor the program budget for multicultural programs in cooperation with the business office.
Provide administrative and supervision of diversity office support staff.

Lead the College’s Signature Programs

Serve as the Program Director for Vet Up! The National HCOP Academy for Veterinary Medicine. Vet Up! is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to provide opportunities and support for equity-minded individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter the veterinary profession and serve society by advancing public health, ensuring food safety, or serving rural areas.

Lead the Certificate Program for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine. Delivered through the Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine, a partnership among Purdue University, the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. The certificate program serves as a resource for the veterinary community.
