Associate Director, Employer Engagement & Experiential Learning
Johns Hopkins University has developed an ambitious vision to continue to integrate life design, experiential learning, and mentoring in the academic and co-curricular learning experience for all students and postdoctoral fellows. Under the leadership of Dr. Farouk Dey, the inaugural vice provost for integrative learning and life design, the university has announced the creation of three new departments and several new initiatives and mission that will ensure that every student and postdoctoral fellow will have the ability to pursue life purpose regardless of background, field of study, or social capital.

We are seeking an Associate Director of Employer Engagement & Experiential Learning who will report to the Executive Director of Doctoral and Post-doctoral Career Design with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Hire Hopkins. The Associate Director of Employer Engagement & Experiential Learning will work within the PHutures office to help expand a vision, strategy, and plan for enhancing the professional development, life design, employer engagement, community relationships, and internship opportunities for all doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows at Johns Hopkins University, with special attention to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering.

The Associate Director will work collaboratively to develop institution-wide programs, internships, experiential learning opportunities, training, events, content, and resources that enhance the career experiences and opportunities for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The Associate Director will work to cultivate and strengthen relationships with employers, alumni and community leaders. The Associate Director will work independently on projects and set their own deadlines and priorities, but can expect to meet regularly with the Executive Director of Doctoral and Postdoctoral Career Design to assess and evaluate priorities and set goals. This position focuses on serving the unique needs of the Doctoral and Postdoctoral population by creating a cultural shift away from the transactional aspects of career services to taking a transformational approach focused on scalability and equitable access to resources and opportunities.

To be successful, the Associate Director will achieve strong engagement and outcomes in the following areas: internships, experiential learning, recruiting, employer engagement, alumni connections, and data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Expand the vision, strategy, and plan of integrating life design, employer engagement, experiential learning, and mentoring into the academic and co-curricular experience for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with employers, alumni and community partners winthin and beyond the JHU ecosystem.
  • Actively engage with colleagues across units, including, but not limited to: Academic departments, Life Design Lab, Hire Hopkins, Hopkins Connect, International Services, Johns Hopkins Tech Ventures (JHTV), Corporate Relations, and Development & Alumni Relations.
  • Assess and continually evaluate Doctoral student and Postdoctoral fellow hiring & internship needs by utilizing data and data analytical tools to capture and tell a meaningful story.
  • Collaborate closely with Hire Hopkins & PHutures to identify potential Doctoral and Postdoctoral level hiring partners and act as a front door for those partners into Hopkins.
  • Conduct market research and forecast hiring trends of top employers to meet the needs of doctoral students & Postdocs.
  • Co-ordinate aspects of deal negotiation and oversee hiring partnerships from the identification through closure stage in collaboration with the team at Hire Hopkins.
  • Work closely with PHutures & Hire Hopkins to lead, expand and create annual and semi-annual flagship hiring and networking programs tailored to the needs of Doctoral students and Postdoctoral fellows.
  • Initiate and coordinate partner engagement including site visits or alternative options to explore opportunities for future or expanded collaboration.
  • Oversee the Humanities & Humanistic Social Sciences Internship Program by working closely with the PHutures, Vice Dean of Graduate Education & the Dean's office at the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences.
  • Establish & lead experiential learning opportunities, internships & industry road trips for Doctoral students & Postdoctoral fellows at Johns Hopkins University, with a special focus on the Homewood Schools.
  • Build and maintain substantive relationships with local companies and organizations to expand the hiring ecosystem between regional employers and JHU talent.
  • Assess, analyze and present findings, data and accomplishments in departmental & university-wide leadership meetings, including to external stakeholders when needed.
  • Assist with management of Handshake including enhancing and tracking employer contacts and managing employer registrations and job/internship postings.
  • Engage in social media, digital outlets, academic and professional journals, and professional associations to establish an exciting brand and tell the story.
  • Assist in establishing innovative digital content and educational materials through the effective use of social media platforms to engage, inspire and impact constituents.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20-25%.

The Ideal Candidate:
  • The ideal candidate is comfortable with co-working and flexible work arrangements, including remote work. Rather than assigning office or desk spaces to our teams, we have modernized our approach and assigned laptops and cell phones and expect that our teams can work from anywhere for the purpose of scaling our impact across the institution.
  • The candidate can expect to work in the Eastern Time Zone (ET).
  • The ideal candidate is therefore self-driven, entrepreneurial, data and outcomes driven, strong in planning and execution, comfortable leading programs and interventions with groups digitally and enjoys developing relationships and connections with multiple stakeholders at once.
  • The ideal candidate is an effective user of social media and digital outlets to engage multiple audiences, strengthen individual and organizational brand, scale impact, and influence public opinion.
  • Candidates who are not comfortable with the utilization of social media in a professional environment may not be a good fit for this organization. The ideal candidate for this position will hold a terminal degree and have experience working with terminal-degree students and postdoctoral fellows.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Three (3) years recent direct experience in business development, sales, HR consulting, or recruiting with large-scale organizations.
  • Proven track-record of having successfully executed business development and negotiated partnerships
  • Proven leadership skills and familiarity with operations of the world of work.
  • Strong multicultural competency; experience and working knowledge in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years operational experience in start-up, small business, or decentralized higher education environments.
  • Professional experience in marketing, communications, branding, and/or social media.
  • Experience in recruiting or talent acquisition, specifically at the graduate level.
  • Experience in collaborating with various stakeholders to drive Diversity and Inclusion results.
  • Experience using Salesforce, Handshake, LinkedIn.
  • Experience in higher education from a research driven institution, including experience in building experiential learning programs that reach large audiences.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • By way of experience, evidence of ability to lead outbound outreach (cold calls, sending emails, and leading high-level discovery calls with organizations who can work with and hire Johns Hopkins graduates and post-doctorate fellows.
  • Ability to translate doctoral and postdoctoral experiences to employment as evidenced by prior experience in either a government, non-profit, education, or private sector setting.
  • By way of experience, evidence of ability to drive hiring partner pipeline through setting up qualified meetings with top employers.
  • Demonstrated skill in fostering new institutional relationships, and marshaling professional networks with employers.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and coordinate partner engagement including site visits or alternative options to explore opportunities for future or expanded collaboration.
  • Set priorities in a complex environment and work effectively under pressure while representing the institution's perspective to external entities.
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective assessment methods and articulating strategic priorities.
  • Ability to demonstrate capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds to promote an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Manage change in a highly decentralized institution.
  • Be empathetic and exhibit kindness as a core value while creating and establishing connections with and for students and postdocs, including in interaction with campus partners.
  • Listen and communicate convincingly in written and verbal formats.
  • Analyze information and situations and make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Sees value in effectively and creatively utilizing social media and digital applications such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn & TikTok to increase engagement and create a visible brand.
  • Understanding of analytical and data-visualization tools like Power BI, R, Tableau is a bonus.
