Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Water Institute at UNC was created in 2009 and is hosted within the Gillings School of Public Health (the #1 public school of global public health) in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE). ESE was established over 90- years ago and maintains an outstanding reputation due to the seminal contributions made by ESE research and tenure-track faculty in environmental health sciences. The Water Institute works to create a more water secure world through research, policy and practice and serves as a platform for mobilizing the knowledge, expertise, and resources that exist across UNC to address critical water and sanitation challenges within the U.S and abroad. The Water Institute includes core faculty and staff, researchers, and a network of experts and adjunct/affiliated faculty members that lead and drive research on areas related to access to safe drinking water and sanitation, water resources management, and transboundary water. In addition to a robust grant portfolio, Institute staff often engage in high-level international events to drive policy reforms on water and sanitation. It also hosts the world’s largest annual international conference on water and health.
Position Summary:The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE), Gillings School of Global Public Health (http://www.sph.unc.edu/ese/), within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, wishes to recruit a full-time fixed-term Assistant Research Professor with expertise at the nexus of drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) and environmental health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We are particularly interested in candidates with experience related to healthcare, schools, and humanitarian settings in LMICs and with the impact of climate change on the resiliency of WaSH services and health.
The successful applicant will conduct and guide research in their area of expertise and participate in collaborative research. They will lead the identification, development, and submission of research proposals and serve as an effective collaborator on others’ proposals. The incumbent will also support the development of a new WaSH concentration as part of the Gillings Master of Public Health program. While classroom teaching will be limited to the occasional lecture unless otherwise agreed to and compensated, the incumbent will be expected to mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students and guide post-doctoral researchers in methods and applications within their areas of expertise. They will serve on graduate student committees in accordance with expectations for their rank. Participation in the work of the Department is expected. The successful candidate will work directly with Dr. Aaron Salzberg as well as others within the Department, the Gillings school, and external organizations in support of the work of the Water Institute at UNC.
The applicant must have a doctorate (PhD, ScD, or DrPH) in environmental health sciences or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Some combination of an academic postdoctoral position and field experience of not less than four years is preferred. The candidate should possess the necessary expertise through a combination of a post baccalaureate degree and professional experience. The successful applicant must have strong writing skills, a record of peer reviewed publications, and a demonstrated ability/willingness to be an effective collaborator and mentor-as responsibilities will include research, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate research students, grant and manuscript writing, and presentation of results. A demonstrated record of working closely with health experts is welcome.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
