Nature of Work

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate or full Professor to serve as an educator in health humanities and as Director of the Anschutz Medical Campus’ Arts and Humanities in Healthcare Program. 

The University of Colorado Center for Bioethics and Humanities develops and implements humanities and arts-related educational programs that impact virtually every learner and academic program on the Anschutz Medical Campus as well as facilitating related undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Colorado and in our local and regional communities. The Center’s Arts and Humanities in Healthcare Program has been a national model and innovator in health humanities education and scholarship since its inception as a campus-wide program in 2009, and we seek an individual to lead this program to the next level of growth and success.

The ideal candidate to direct the Arts and Humanities in Healthcare Program will be a visionary leader with a passion for teaching and a record of excellence and national prominence in health humanities, including significant accomplishments in education and scholarship in the field. We seek an innovative, energetic, and engaging director, capable of upholding our position as a pioneering program in health humanities and shaping future directions for the program and the field. The director must have a strong track record in one or more of the major sub-fields within health humanities, such as narrative theory and practice in health care; media and health; exploration of music, writing, and/or visual arts in healthcare settings; or dramatic arts, such as improv or theatre of the oppressed. Experience in and passion for teaching are critical, including a strong commitment to influencing the growth and identity formation of health professions students through the arts and humanities, recognizing that music, history, literature, poetry, other arts and reflective writing support transformative learning into reflective and humanistic practice. Experience in clinical/therapeutic use of the arts in health care settings and in securing and conducting funded research related to arts and humanities in health care are highly desired.

The program director will help lead the ongoing expansion of the Center’s teaching and training programs and will have primary responsibilities related to teaching in health humanities across all of the University of Colorado’s health professions schools, including dental medicine, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, physical therapy and physician assistant programs. The Center plays a leading role in the University’s required interprofessional education curriculum, oversees and contributes to teaching in the Bioethics and Humanities Trail in the School of Medicine’s Trek Curriculum, and regularly teaches electives in other colleges and schools. The Center is also responsible for some residency training and collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the University of Colorado Denver’s Health Humanities Minor, including teaching the Minor’s required introductory course. The director is responsible for leadership and active participation in curriculum and program development and evaluation and serves as a mentor for university faculty and students who aspire to further study, training or development of teaching skills in arts and humanities in health care.

In addition to these core educational roles for the university, the director of the program has multiple opportunities to use Center resources to enhance the lives of our university colleagues and to reach beyond the university to our regional, national and international partners and stakeholders. These resources include The Art Gallery at the Fulginiti Pavilion for Bioethics and Humanities; the Music and Medicine Initiative, including the Anschutz Campus Choir and Orchestra; editorial oversight of the annual publication, The Human Touch: A Journal of Literature and the Arts; and curation of the Arts in Medicine Lecture series, the endowed Claman Lectureship and other programming.

Finally, the program director serves as a prominent advocate, fundraiser and voice for health humanities and for using humanities and arts to enhance empathy, understanding and resilience in health care. Candidates for this position should be prepared to lead the creation of new and expanded opportunities for students, health professionals, patients and the public to engage in discourse about important issues facing health care and society around social justice, equity, and human rights. The program director will be particularly expected to expand opportunities for learners from groups that have been traditionally marginalized and whose voices have not been heard.

The candidate must be willing to relocate to the Denver area within 3 months of the start date. Please note: we are unable to provide employment-based sponsorship for this position.

Interviews for this position will begin in the summer/fall of 2022, with a preferred start date in January 2023.  The start date is flexible and the position will remain open until filled.

Salary Offered or Salary Range
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $100,000 to $175,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Education

• A terminal degree (PhD, MD or JD) in a relevant humanities or social sciences discipline.

Experience

5+ years of documented teaching experience in health humanities in a medical or health sciences environment.A record of quality scholarship and significant contributions to the discipline and accompanying pedagogy.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive experience and a track record of notable innovation in teaching health humanities.Experience in curriculum development and educational research.Experience in fundraising for arts and humanities programs and/or experience obtaining external funds for research on arts and humanities in health careExperience in teaching online.Experience in mentoring students in graduate and professional degree programs.Excellent record of quality scholarship and publications.
