Job Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Center/Trauma Research is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant. The successful candidate is expected to work independently, exercise discretion, and perform research activities and analysis, maintain a high level of organization, contribute to general maintenance of the laboratory, and maintain accurate records. Assignments in this position require advanced and highly specialized knowledge of the concepts, practices, procedures, and policies of laboratory analysis.

This is a full time contractual position.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: data entry and organization, IT set-up and break down, participant recruitment, scheduling.
  • Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: designing experimental procedures, assisting in the anatomy lab, manuscript preparation, etc.  May participate in the design of research studies.
  • Independently compile and analyze research data using various relevant statistical computer software applications.  Coordinate and maintains data reports and database files on progress of research.  May receive, inventory, enter, and organize collected data.
  • Assist in preparation and editing of literature, manuscripts, presentations, and research proposals by developing, interpreting, and presenting statistical information such as tables, charts, graphs, and other computer graphics.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians: assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, ordering supplies, and maintaining safety compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.

Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.

May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possesses a knowledge of position requirements and the ability to perform position in compliance with all requirements/regulations/laws.  Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory.  Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications. Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed.  Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology.  Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base. Able to make independent decisions that are a matter of significance.
  • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments. Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility.
  • Effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Write and present information in a clear and concise way.  Interpret and understand written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Remain highly organized with strong data entry and bookkeeping skills.
  • Work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.  Demonstrate pleasant and positive interactions with other to meet customer expectations and provide follow up with customers.  Reach compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate. Remain calm and manage conflict and work well with a diverse workforce.
Hiring Range:  Low to mid $40,000s; commensurate with education and experience
