POSITION SUMMARY: Pomona College is seeking highly qualified candidates for the positions of Assistant Dean (Sophomore Class Dean). Working in the Division of Student Affairs and reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/ Dean of Students for Academic and Personal Success, the sophomore class dean is responsible for a comprehensive program of advising and class management in the context of a liberal arts setting. The sophomore class dean collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and community members to support equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments. The sophomore class dean works closely with campus offices, including but not limited to: Counseling/ Student Health Services, Campus Life, Student Conduct, the Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Study Abroad, affinity/ identity centers, and student success centers to both inform and enhance resources and services in support of student learning and engagement.

 

Reporting directly to the AVP for Student Affairs/ Dean of Students of Academic and Personal Success, the Assistant Dean of Students works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Develop programs and services to meet the holistic needs of sophomore year students at both the individual and community levels, in accordance with appropriate developmental markers and the current class dean curriculum/ learning outcomes. Serve as one of four class deans providing academic, personal, and administrative advice and counsel to a class of students Serve as a point of contact for parents, faculty members, coaching staff, and other campus colleagues with academic and/or personal concerns about sophomore students Provide support to students in addressing personal issues that may be a barrier to academic success; refer students to appropriate campus and community resources
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, campus partners, including Dean of Students Office, Campus Life, and Residence Life/Housing Office, Athletics, counseling and Student Health Services, and Accessibility Resources and Services, affinity/ identity centers, student resource centers and Campus Safety to promote academic, personal, and psycho-social wellness of students. Monitor student academic progress, document, and establish systems for student support – including students on academic probation, suspension, students taking a leave of absence/ semester withdrawal, and other students of concern.
  • Provide appropriate interventions and referrals to support resources. Analyze information and build data-driven processes to improved procedures and protocols to encourage persistence, retention, and student success. Maintain case files/ notes and confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and College policy
  • Serve on the College’s behavioral intervention team to facilitate cross-campus partnerships to address students of concern and establish wraparound networks for support. Keep current on trends and best practices in advising, retention, student development, and student success.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts is required. Master’s degree in higher education, student development, or related field is highly preferred.  A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.  At least three to five years of comprehensive student affairs experience working with college students, including diverse and/or underrepresented college student populations.

 

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Regular, full-time, exempt position.  Starting pay rate: $69,651 per year.

 

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
