Job Summary:Southern Methodist University has an opening for a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to contribute on two National Science Foundation Awards: “Group-Based Cloud Computing for STEM Education Project” and “UTeach and NYC: A Design Research Partnership to Expand and Improve High School Computer Science Education for Underrepresented Urban Youth" as well as a Toyota Foundation award to prepare K-8 high need students for the next generation of STEM jobs and to provide them with both the expertise and innovation mindset they need to thrive. The West Dallas STEM School is a collaboration with the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University, DISD and the Toyota Foundation in creating a new STEM-focused, PreK-8 school to serve families in West Dallas.

 

These inter-disciplinary collaborative projects explore children’s and adults’ intuitive understanding of, and formal learning about, complex STEM concepts in the area of computational thinking, engineering, STEM integration and research practice partnerships.

Applicants should have particular interest in children’s knowledge acquisition, inquiry learning, technology, development of scientific cognition and the application of basic cognitive developmental research to the design of STEM education materials.

Postdoctoral fellows participate deeply in the academic life of the Simmons College of Education, the Moody School of Graduate of Education and as well as the Dallas area’s vibrant atmosphere. The successful candidate will receive substantive career mentoring and opportunities for independent research and professional development.

This Post Doctoral position is for 2 years (24 months).

 

This role role is an on-campus, in-person position.

Essential Functions:
  • Conducting research and helping to supervise data collections in school classrooms and online with teachers and students.
  • Conducting lab and online studies with children; engaging with cross-site multi-disciplinary teams of learning scientists and education researchers.

  • Quantitative and qualitative data analyses.

  • Co-supervision of a research team.

  • Co-writing reports for funding agencies.

  • Presentations at conferences and workshops.  Authorship of publications in peer-reviewed journals.



Qualifications
Education and Experience:An earned doctorate is required.   Field of study in Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology,  Instructional Design, Data Science or related field.

Computer programming experience (NetLogo) or machine learning research skills is preferred

Background in experimental and/or intervention research design is preferred.

Quantitative and qualitative data analytic methods (experience with Design-Based Research approaches is desirable but not required).

Excellent capacity for independent, creative scholarship; strong authorship/writing skills, as well as evidence of productivity in peer-reviewed journals is preferred.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must have excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with multiple types of researchers and partners.

Must have excellent statistical and data analytic skills, as well as strong qualitative skills.

Candidate must be highly organized with effective planning, project management and time management skills.

Candidate must have strong problem solving skills and be able to problem solve in all phases of the research process.

Must be self-directed and able to function independently. 

Travel is minimal in this position. May involve travel to learning sites and meetings with partners, and conferences.
