Job Summary:
  • The College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics at Eastern Washington University invites applications for an Engineering Technician 2 in the department of Mechanical Engineering & Technology to begin December 2021.



  • The candidate selected for this position will support faculty and students in tasks related to academic instruction and research. They will be expected to work under general direction from faculty, in the independent design, development, fabrication, modification, assembly and repair of various electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical instruments, apparatus and equipment.

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology or technology
  • Four or more years as an engineering technician
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is sensitive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of the students, faculty, administrators and external contacts.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology or technology
  • Relevant industrial experience
  • Great interpersonal skills

Job Duties:
% of Time: 100
Responsibility / Duty: Position will require the successful candidate to perform all of the following essential functions:
  • Work independently in an unsupervised setting
  • Work closely with and support faculty
  • Prepare samples for laboratory work and assist faculty in the laboratory
  • Instruct laboratory personnel in the assembly, operation, and maintenance of experimental apparatus and instruments
  • Building safety contact and handle building safety inspections
  • Inventory control for department owned equipment to include commonly used tools and supplies
  • Key access control for the Computing and Engineering Building and Cheney Hall
  • Purchasing using department procurement card
  • Design complete systems
  • Design analog and/or digital interface(s) for pieces of equipment within the system and update them as required
  • Perform skilled and precision work on the construction and/or assembly of instruments and equipment such as strain gauge holders, amplifiers, calibrators, transducer
  • Generate block diagrams, design circuits and circuit board layout, write software as needed, and select components
  • Build (including enclosure(s)) using electronic, machine and hand tools such as drill presses, soldering guns, and arch welders, lathes, grinders, etc.
  • Evaluate suitability of commercially-manufactured equipment for use in classroom and research requirements
  • Obtain costs, compare, evaluate, and order parts and new equipment
  • Install equipment and test for proper operation, adjust and calibrate
  • Use diagnostic software as needed
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and support equipment
  • Manage student employees and may direct the work of other personnel
  • Mentor and assist student teams
  • Repurpose and prototype surplus equipment
  • Be current with lates technology and make available for instruction
  • Surplus out-dated equipment and building property
  • Store and glean recycled parts
  • Prepare written documentation when appropriate
  • Track hazardous locker usage and correct safety concerns
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.



  • All new employees must comply with EWU immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.

  • This position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Salary Information: $47,568 – $62,448
