The Linux Administrator oversees the most critical server environments for CLAS. This position will serve as the subject matter expert of Linux and server infrastructure and will strive to protect CLAS and the University through proper server management practices and strong security principles. The Linux Administrator is responsible for supporting and protecting public-facing web infrastructure as well as internal High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, and will be working in data center environments on server and network hardware. This position strives to optimize existing environments, constantly looking for methods of improving processes, infrastructure design, and configurations, utilizing automation techniques to simplify overall server management procedures. The Linux Administrator also serves as the highest technical point of escalation for the CLAS IT Support Desk, assisting with only the most complex and critical issues that arise within the college.

This position will regularly interface with our CLAS IT Support Desk student employees, and as such may assist in training new student technical employees and may fit into a mentor role for those students.

Key Responsibilities

    Server administration, including implementation and installation, virtualization, file system configuration, hardware maintenance, storage management, software licensing, regular system updates, securing and hardening, and proactive monitoring and maintenanceProvide support and management for several High-Performance Computing (HPC) environmentsOversee the management of server infrastructure that houses CLAS web services such as DrupalAdminister a heavily mixed Linux computing environment, including RedHat, CentOS and UbuntuAdminister data center network environments including layer 1 connectivity, InfiniBand, subnet design, and virtualizationSecure critical server and network infrastructure and ensure proper maintenance and patch management to protect CLAS assetsEnsure high availability and acceptable levels of performance for server and network resourcesInstall, configure, repair, manage, and replace server and storage hardwareManage and maintain user accounts, groups, and access rights to network resourcesAnalyze ways to improve automation and develop processes or procedures to simplify management of computing infrastructureCollaborate with the central Office of IT for hosted virtual services, storage, network configuration and support, and enterprise services such as DNS, Active Directory, and moreDocument designs, configurations, topologies, and problem resolutions for server and network infrastructureAct as the highest technical point of escalation for the Support Desk, providing technical support for CLAS students/faculty/staff for only the most complex and critical issues
Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position has been established at $71,470 - $90,910.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

    A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, information technology, or a directly related field from an accredited institutionSubstitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted on a year for year basis
3 years of professional experience administering Linux server environments Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience managing scientific HPC environments including technologies such as Slurm, Sungrid, TensorFlow, Docker, and KubernetesExperience working with enterprise technology management tools such as Active DirectoryExperience managing virtual server environments leveraging technologies such as VMWare ESXiExperience with large enterprise network environments, including VLANs, DNS, NAT, firewalls, and basic routing protocolsExperience documenting and communicating complex designs using tools such as Microsoft VisioExperience providing technical support and maintenance of hardware, software, and peripherals in a complex enterprise environmentIndustry certifications a plus, such as:CompTIA: A+, Network+, Security+, Server+, Linux+Linux: RHCSA, LFCSCisco: CCT, CCNAVMWare: VCTA, VCP
