The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is currently recruiting for a Manager, Media and Public Relations. This position is responsible for enhancing the School of Nursing’s (SON) reputation by promoting its efforts in a variety of areas through media/public relations, internal communications development and management, written and edited publications, website content management, and photography and videography management.

The position manages media relations and includes contributions in the form of written material and content for all internal and external documents and publications. It requires excellent written, editorial, copyediting, and verbal communication skills. The incumbent will be responsible for projects from request to completion by coordinating workflow and timelines and meeting deadlines. This position will create public informational content to target audiences for SON communications, including multimedia content for use on the website and on social media.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

    Provide media, public relations, and editorial expertise for the School of Nursing (SON) and develop public relations strategies and tactics. Develop, write, and edit press releases and other communications materials that may be visible in publications or online. Collaborate with media representatives to develop and maintain relationships, pitch School of Nursing programs and activities, and respond to media inquiries to ensure School of Nursing reputation is positively maintained. Spot media trends and prepare responses as needed. Write and edit various publications, collaborate with vendors, and process constituent requests to ensure communications goals and objectives are achieved. Advise leadership on strategic and effective reactions to breaking news or media relations opportunities. Integrate PR and media relations with social media and other communications channels. Train faculty and staff on media preparedness. Manage the School’s internal Elm news platform which includes contributing content and moderating contributed content as well as preparing the weekly digest newsletter. Contribute extensive written content and manage a section of UMSON’s national award-winning biannual print magazine, Nursing For/um. Develop relationships with new employees to manage a related internal newsletter and oversee the professional head shot process for all incoming employees. Assist in planning and management of crisis communications, as needed. Accountable for success of special short- and long-term communication projects that increase the University’s exposure and recognition. Oversee project plans and tracking. Supervise, train, and mentor faculty and staff in media preparation including planning and writing stories, news advisories and releases, and communicating with media on the phone or in person. Cover a variety of events for internal and external communications. Remain current on changing technologies and news trends. May create and implement videography and photography initiatives that require liaising with multiple audiences.  Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree, such as English, journalism, or communications. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public or client relations. Experience working with the Cision media relations management platform preferred. 

Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of work coordination, scheduling, and training of others.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of issues and trends impacting health care/academia. Knowledge of and proficiency in Associated Press style. Ability to create and capitalize on news-making opportunities. Skill in serving as a liaison with clients, vendors, and staff members and effectively communicating their ideas, messages, or instincts. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Skill in creating, curating, and publishing multimedia content. Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.

Hiring Range: Low $80,000s to low $90,000s; commensurate with education and experience.
