Position Summary:

The TRIO Student Support Services at Norwalk Community College is dedicated to increasing the retention, completion, and transfer of NCC students – especially those who are underrepresented in higher education, financially under-resourced, first generation in college, nontraditional or otherwise educationally disadvantaged. We facilitate student transitions, build community and guide students through the completion of their two-year degree in preparation for a successful transition to a four-year college. This program, open to all eligible NCC students, includes the TRIO Student Support Services program – open to 247 first generation, low income, or students with a disability. The TRIO Student Support Services provides one on one advising and tutoring, counseling; academic, personal, career, transfer, financial literacy, and academic success workshops, transfer planning and preparation classes as well as the opportunity to participate summer retention program.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Experience with recruiting, coaching, or mentoring
  • Experience Advising/Academic assistance experience with at risk population
  • Knowledge of FAFSA, financial aid processes and financial literacy
  • Experience planning and facilitating group activities/workshops

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with coordinating activities and events
  • Experience scheduling meetings and organizing calendars/tracking
  • Bi-Lingual (E.g. Spanish, Creole etc.)
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the TRIO Program Director, the TRIO Academic Advisor is responsible for performing supportive participant-related activities to increase the level of academic success and retention of NCC College Trio participants; assist with program outreach and perform these essential duties:

  • Recruit new participants by attending campus/outreach events
  • Schedule all and conduct Intake Interviews (Needs Assessment & Individual Plan)
  • Advise, assist and monitor progress of program participants
  • Document student progress in database and on service logs
  • Provide academic assistance/study skills/tutoring to participants
  • Conduct/facilitate Student Development workshops
  • Assist with FAFSA completion, provide financial aid/scholarship information
  • Advise and assist with the transfer process
  • Assist with coordination and support for program/student activities
  • Provide referral to appropriate campus resources
  • Chaperone and assist with coordination of campus visits and cultural trips
  • Engage in professional development activities/Trio Club
  • Work schedule adjusted to fulfill activities and functions as needed
