California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in the Music Department in an area related to the study and/or promotion of Music Education.

Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona – nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020. 58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International 3% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Tenure track faculty hires will demonstrate a commitment and record of contributions through their teaching, scholarship, or service to these inclusive excellence criteria (a minimum of two must be addressed in the Student Success Statement):

    Our 10 FT faculty and numerous adjunct faculty work with approx. 270 majors, and we normally present over 60 events annually, from recitals and concerts to masterclasses.     The Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) Option as part of the Bachelor of Music degree is a state-accredited subject matter program in music; students are able to begin their credential preparation courses in their senior year, helping to streamline the path to licensure. Replacing a well-established BA program in Music Education, we established the new BM in 2019; this new program already has 25 majors and is expected to grow, as we develop new approaches for the post-pandemic 21st century school environment.

    Position description:

    The Department of Music at Cal Poly Pomona seeks an Assistant Professor in Music Education to help grow the new Bachelor of Music Degree’s Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) Option.

    The successful candidate will:

  • Teach music education courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, particularly those focused on music education and music methods, such as Intro to Music Education, Music Foundations, Secondary Instrumental Methods or Teaching Music Literacy, Curriculum and Methods in the Subject Areas.
  • Other assigned courses will depend upon the candidate’s expertise and area needs.
  • Collaborate in the ongoing improvement of music education courses to reflect diverse contemporary theory and practice.
  • Demonstrate inclusive education practices in teaching, mentoring, and related activities.
  • Maintain a record of scholarly/creative activity.
  • Supervise music credential candidates in their Clinical Practice (student teaching) and collaborate with the Single Subject Credential program.
  • Organize recruitment activities and build relationships in the surrounding schools and communities to assist in outreach, clinical practice placement, advising, retention, and alumni relations.
  • Serve on faculty committees as an area, school, and/or college representative as needed.
  • Minimum requirements include:

  • Doctorate in Music Education (DMA or PhD) or closely related degree (Degree must be conferred by start of appointment)
  • A commitment and a record of contributions to student success through applicant’s teaching, scholarship, or service. This will be described in the Student Success Statement, which must address at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.
  • 3 or more years successful experience teaching music in K-12 Schools
  • Ability to teach Music Methods courses and collaborate with Single Subject Credential Program
  • Ongoing or clear plan of scholarly/creative activities
  • Engagement in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in research, teaching, and service.
  • Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Holds a single subject credential/license in music
  • 3+ years documented successful experience teaching music in K-12 Public Schools
  • Area of specialty that complements departmental needs
  • Successful teaching at university/college level in addition to the K-12 experience
  • Experience coaching/supervising Clinical Practice (student teaching) in schools

  • Scholarly/Creative Activities Plan (2 page max);
  • At least three letters of recommendation, dated within the last two years, at least one of which must specifically address teaching;
  • The names and contact information for at least three individuals that can serve as references;
  • Candidates who advance beyond the preliminary round may be asked for additional materials, including videos of them teaching and/or conducting.

    Finalists for the position will:

  • be required to provide official transcripts for highest degree before the on-campus interview;
  • be invited to an on-campus interview where they are expected to make a presentation of scholarly/creative work; and a teaching demonstration with students.
