California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in the English and Modern Languages Department in an area related to the study and/or promotion of Linguistics/TESOL.

Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona – nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020. 58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International, 3% two or more races, 3% unknown, and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. 39% of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Department of English and Modern Languages (EML) is a blended department that explores the intersection of diverse languages and cultures through the disciplines of applied linguistics, languages, writing, and literature. EML serves more than 500 undergraduate majors with specialized options in Literature, English Education, Spanish, Applied Language Studies, and over 80 graduate students with options in Literature, Rhetoric & Composition, and TESOL.

The Department’s faculty support each other through clusters of scholarly interests around subjects such asWriting Studies (including creative writing, translation studies, multimodal literacies, etc.); Critical Race Studies; Digital Humanities; and Multilingualism/Multilingual Education (including minors in TESOL, Spanish, French, Chinese, and a certificate in German). Responding to student needs, experiences, and interests, EML looks to build additional support in these areas in order to prepare the students for the professional world.

Position Description:

The Department seeks a tenure-line faculty member in Linguistics and TESOL with the primary areas of expertise in Second Language Acquisition and Second Language (L2) Pedagogy. The successful candidate will teach a lower-division General Education introductory course in Linguistics as well as upper-division linguistics and research methods courses in the English BA program (particularly in the Applied Language Studies option) and graduate courses in TESOL. Opportunities for the creation of new courses in the faculty’s area of expertise and interest are available. All faculty members in the Department are also expected to provide service to the Department, College, and the University by participating in relevant committee work and supporting and fostering student success by mentoring students, advising clubs, organizing and conducting service-learning courses and internships, and similar activities. The successful candidate will maintain an active research agenda as both the University and the Department are strongly committed to the Teacher-Scholar model.
