Job Description

The Center for Excellence in Financial Counseling at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is recognized as a national leader in financial counseling and education with a focus on research, education, and service collaboratives. While housed in the College of Business Administration, the CEFC director collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of faculty and staff across the University to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate programming that advances the mission of the CEFC to promote excellence in financial counseling through research, interdisciplinary efforts and enhanced professional development of financial counselors.

• Provide leadership to the Center for Excellence in Financial Counseling (CEFC).
• Under College of Business Administration supervision, provide oversight of the Center's budget and fiscal operations including the allocation and use of program resources.
• Provide reports for various audiences and partners.
• Collaborate with Dean, internal and external stakeholders, and CEFC Leadership Council in CEFC planning and development efforts.
• Seek and apply for funding that would assist in meeting and furthering goals of campus and community-based research and outreach projects.
• Strengthen awareness of CEFC's programming and outcomes among higher education and industry through conference workshops, webinars and journal publications
• Collaborate with College and University marketing team to create marketing content and communication strategies to inform CEFC stakeholders of CEFC initiatives
• Manage meetings of the CEFC Leadership Council in coordination with the Leadership Council Chair.
• Teach up to1-2 courses per year, as needed, relating to financial counseling and planning, including engaging students in the counseling and planning process.
• Serve on College and University committees.


• Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, partnerships, and collegiality with a variety of stakeholders, including the internal university community.

• Commitment to fostering relationships and development opportunities with the financial counseling, planning, and education communities including the higher education financial wellness community

• Strong background in developing and implementing programs that build individual financial capabilities leading to achieving individual financial wellbeing.

• Strong project management and time management skills.

• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

• Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Personal Finance, Financial Planning, Consumer/Family Economics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate in Counseling, Social Work, Personal Finance, Financial Planning, Consumer/Family Economics or related field.

• Experience running a financial counseling center or comparable enterprise and experience working with college students highly desired.

• Teaching effectiveness in the areas of financial counseling and personal finance in face-to face and online modalities.

• Experience in financial counseling or planning and curriculum development.

• AFC®, CFP®, or equivalent professional experience required to oversee and conduct financial counseling

• Active professional membership in relevant organizations.

CEFC was founded and funded at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2009 by the former Foundation for Credit Education. The national CEFC Leadership Council includes members from academia, industry leaders, government, researchers, advocates, and policymakers and serves as an advisory board and stewards of the CEFC’s mission-focused programming established in the Endowment Fund Agreement. CEFC has launched two promising student loan repayment programs to help borrowers successfully repay their student loans.
