Summary of Duties:

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University in Pullman, WA invites applications for multiple permanent full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty positions in Computer Science at the assistant/associate/full professor levels, with specialization in areas of computer systems and/or intelligence systems. The following two major areas (and related topics) of computer science and engineering will be considered: (i) computer systems (operating systems, storage systems, high performance computing systems, computer architecture, and electronic design automation), and (ii) intelligent systems (all areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning including sequential decision-making, robustness and safety, natural language processing, and AI for social good; and security areas including differential privacy and applied cryptography). WSU is ranked Top-20 as per CSRankings.org in several areas including electronic design automation and high-performance computing, and these positions are intended to build on these strengths. The new faculty will have numerous collaboration opportunities with several large initiatives at WSU including (but not limited to) the NSF-USDA AgAID AI Institute, and DOD-funded CySER Institute for cybersecurity.

Requirements for both areas are:

Candidates for Assistant Professor must have an earned Ph.D. degree in a reputable program in computer science or a related field by the time of hire; candidates for Associate Professor must additionally have served at least 6 years as an Assistant Professor or equivalent; candidates for the full Professor must have served at least 6 years as an Associate Professor or equivalent aside from the required PhD degree described above. Candidates at all ranks must already have published promising research work, and demonstrate a strong commitment to building a world-class research and training program. Candidates must additionally have strong leadership qualities commensurate with the rank, as well as exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a commitment to diversifying the student body.

Duties for both areas are:

The job duties of successful candidates at all ranks include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science; conducting funded research; publishing in top-tier venues; directing M.S. and Ph.D. student research programs; participating in the continuous teaching assessment activities of the School of EECS; effectively communicating and interacting with students; and collaborating with others within the School, the University, or other organizations including regional partners such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

About the School of EECS:

The new faculty hired for this position will join 37 existing tenure-track faculty members in the School of EECS, which has experienced rapid growth in enrollment over the past four years. Around the fall of 2021 approximately 1200 undergraduate students were enrolled in its B.S., and B.A programs, and 275 graduate students are enrolled in its M.S., and Ph.D. programs in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. EECS expects continued increase in enrollments and anticipates multiple faculty hires over the next two years. The current faculty composition in the School of EECS includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering and ten fellows of national professional organizations as well as fourteen CAREER and Young Investigator award recipients. Our graduate students have recently won multiple prestigious awards including Microsoft Research fellowship, IBM Research fellowship, and NSF Computing Innovation fellowship.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
