Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Admissions, Student Life, and Inclusivity (ASI) seeks a high-energy, service-oriented, student focused, collaborative, and self-motivated individual for the position of Assistant Director for Student Affairs. Reporting to the associate dean for ASI and working closely with colleagues throughout the university and the CVM. The Assistant Director for Student Affairs primary role will be to plan, implement, monitor, manage and/or coordinate services and programs in order to provide positive educational experience for students in the veterinary nursing (VN) and doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM):

  • assigned ASI & CVM programming
  • student affairs projects
  • events and initiatives including:
  • new Student Orientation for DVM students
  • transition to clinics ceremony for VN and DVM students
  • senior awards/celebration and CVM awards for VN and DVM students
  • career fairs, resume coaching, new graduates contract review mentorship
  • clubs, organizations, corporate liaison
  • career seminars, and other supporting events celebrating the success of students, faulty, and staff in the CVM.

The successful applicant will have the ability to take on multiple tasks in a dynamic environment and complete them efficiently, accurately, and independently. The selected candidate will be expected to provide exceptional service to individuals through clear and effective verbal and written communication.

Key areas of responsibilities:

Lead, direct student affairs and Employer Engagement-Job Resources while creating programming-Workshops-Recruiting Events. Develop, conduct, and evaluate career development activities that may be delivered through technology, classes, career fairs, workshops/programs, outreach, and other forums. Organize recruiting events for CVM students and veterinary employers. Identifies the need to develop, promote, implement and evaluate programs and workshops for students. Supervises and evaluates staff.

  • Coordinate MSU CVM Veterinary Medicine Career Fair (fall each year)
  • Coordinate MSU CVM Veterinary Medicine Employment Practice Interviews through VM VM539 course.
  • Collaborate to create three high quality programs per semester that incorporates elements of student life, career services, wellness, and inclusivity.
  • Plan, secure presenters for career seminars in the DVM curriculum for CVM students.
  • Point person for employer inquiries/information related to employment opportunities
  • Distribute job postings to students through email, Handshake, job bulletin, CVM newsletter, CVM webpage.
  • Create and distribute Student Job Bulletin
  • Create, manage, and distribute career development materials and resources to students.
  • Create and manages career development video library
  • Conduct outreach to veterinary employers for job initiatives and CVM events and initiatives.
  • Partner with Career Services colleagues across campus
  • Contribute to Career Services Network annual report by creating Veterinary Medicine annual report
  • Provide approximately 20 hours of support fall and spring of instruction in the CVM careers course (VM 506, VM 537, and VM 539).

Student Advising Engagement and Interpersonal Relationships-Provide career counseling on-site to students, including review of professional documents, career planning, career resources, veterinary career pathways, job search strategies, plan and implement annual career fair.

Student Life – Contribute as team member to OASI events and initiatives.

  • Lead mentorship program with support from administrative staff

  • Transition ceremony
  • Participate in CVM Enrichment Summer Program
  • Oversee student clubs and class leaders
  • Corporate student representative and club’s liaison
  • Updates at department meetings
  • Supervise Student Life Support Coordinator
  • Participate in ASI team members initiatives

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Student Affairs Administration, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology or Counselor Education; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing and implementing programs, policies and procedures and supervising and coordinating staff; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated strategic thinker in the partnership of student affairs and its collaborative partners within an academic setting to achieve the academic mission.
  • Previous leadership experience required i.e., setting goals, communicating, building trust, holding people accountable.
  • Previous management experience required including hiring, performance management, team building
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate with individuals in organizations outside of the University
  • Previous experience working with student advising, admission and/or development in higher education academic setting
