About the Department:

The Office of Global Engagement’s (OGE) mission is to provide university-level leadership, innovation, and coordination to equip students, faculty, staff, and communities with the global knowledge, cultural understanding, skills and experience to compete and collaborate in the new global economy. OGE collaborates with other campus units and strategic partners in the creation, implementation and coordination of integrative, multidisciplinary and globally focused education, research, and economic development programs.
The Office of Global Engagement promotes international programs, plans and manages global activities, assists with academic planning for global knowledge/experience requirements and provides logistical support for all international engagement on campus and abroad.

Essential Job Duties:

The Communication Specialist is a key member of the Office of Global Engagement, working directly with the senior vice provost, unit directors and other division staff in strategically communicating the division’s vision, goals, strategic initiatives, and accomplishments, both internally and externally.
The position assists with global knowledge delivery and international experience impact assessment, promotes global programs and activities, and heads messaging and outreach related to all international engagement on campus and abroad.
The Communications Specialist is a part of the OGE leadership team who is responsible for creating strategic messaging, communication, and outreach for Global Engagement by connecting faculty, students, staff, alumni, global partners, and the external community through strategic reports, marketing and promotional initiatives, the website, newsletters, social media, and networking activities.
Responsibilities of the Communication Specialist will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contributing to Global Engagement strategic planning and annual assessment in an effort to advance global engagement at NC State University by attending division-wide leadership meetings
  • Leading an internal team of communicators from the Office of Global Engagement’s sub-units to execute division-wide marketing efforts
  • Representing the division during university-wide meetings (Provost’s communication meetings, university communicators meetings)
  • Spearheading the initiative to partner with colleges/units across the university to strategically place news stories highlighting global learning at home and abroad
  • Implementing a strategic digital marketing and communication plan to increase website, social media, and email performance focusing on data tracking and performance optimization
  • Developing and implementing communications (social media and web) for promoting global engagement activities, such as expos, global seminars, and symposiums
  • Creating content and publishing a bi-weekly GlobalEyes newsletter for distribution to the university community, as well as a specialized monthly newsletter for alumni
  • Optimizing newsletter readership through analyzing newsletter performance and making adjustments as needed
  • Managing and updating the content of the Global Engagement website with global learning stories, announcements, funding sources, and facts/figures
  • Improving website performance through search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Providing all units within Global Engagement with branding guidelines, leading the communications committee to facilitate information-sharing across the division, and sharing university-wide communication-related updates with the division
  • Coordinating the division’s fundraising efforts through developing strategic messages (i.e. storytelling) that are consistent among all units
  • Supervising a part-time alumni outreach coordinator to align overall messaging strategies
  • Demonstrating strong project management skills to manage multiple stakeholders through international and external communication skillset
  • Prioritizing different projects as they arise and displaying strong decision-making skills

Other Responsibilities:

  • Supporting ongoing event and programming efforts for campus-wide global engagement
  • Designing e-billboards and marketing materials
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills, including storytelling, interpersonal and writing skills, with a working proficiency in Microsoft Office software (or similar software) and other web-communication applications.
  • Must have the ability to take initiative and have a strong ability to multitask.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree plus the equivalent of three years work experience preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education administration would be a plus, as would international experience such as living and working in a foreign country, or proficiency in a foreign language.
