Essential Job Duties:

The candidate for this position will be required to develop, implement, evaluate and market effective and successful educational programs.Program areas will include field crops (soybean, corn, wheat, and cotton), fresh market and wholesale vegetable crops, pesticide education/ re-certification, and any other subject matter that meet the needs of the citizens and producers in Tyrrell County or is deemed appropriate by the County Extension Director.

Due to the unique organic soils in the area, this candidate will be required to work together with Beaufort, Hyde, and Washington County Agriculture Extension Agents to provide regional programs such as on-farm test plots and demonstrations, the Blackland Farm Manager’s Tour, and other field days, and winter production meetings. This candidate should be a team player and support the total Extension program, in the county, as well as in the region; possess a strong work ethic, be highly self-motivated, forward-thinking, prioritize farmer needs, be a good communicator, and have strong interpersonal skills. This candidate should also possess appropriate technology skills and be willing to secure resources to implement and enhance all educational programs.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Tyrrell County is located in northeastern NC. It is bordered on the north by the Albemarle Sound, on the east by the Alligator River, on the south by Hyde County, and on the west by Washington County. The land area is 389.9 sq. miles or 248,980 acres. The USDA Farm Service Agency records indicate that there are 52,946 acres of farmland. The major crops are corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and Irish potatoes. Tyrrell ranks 11th in soybean, and 5th in corn production. Total cash receipts from farming, including government payments, in 2017 were $47,853,374. Agriculture is the largest industry, as well as the largest private employer, in the county. Federal, state, and local governments, including the school system, employ the most people.

Large land owners in the county include Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (111,000 acres mostly in Tyrrell Co.), Buckridge Coastal Reserve (27,000 acres), Palmetto-Peartree Preserve (10,000 acres), and Weyerhaeuser Timber Company.

Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with some programming on evenings and weekends.

Minimum Experience/Education:

A Bachelor’s degree in an agricultural related field is required; Master’s degree preferred. The Temporary County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Temporary County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Department Required Skills:

A Bachelor’s degree in crop science, agronomy, or a closely related field is required.

The candidate must be able to network with diverse audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and local Extension staff. The candidate must be able to develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs and provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.

Travel within the district is required. Occasional travel outside the district is required.
