Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Residence Life (ADRL) is a senior member of the Housing and Residence Life staff. The ADRL directly supervises Area Coordinators, graduate assistants and resident assistants. The ADRL will provide direction for and coordinate the activities of staff members in the areas related to academic initiatives, student behavior, personnel and administrative policies and procedures, student and community development, and staff supervision and development. They will also coordinate and facilitate student life programming and develops a community environment. This position will require non-traditional work hours to include but not limited to evenings, weekends and university breaks. The ADRL is also required to serve as part of the departmental on-call rotation to respond to and support hall management staff members through emergencies, urgent matters, and policy violations on east and west campuses. The ADRL reports to the Director of Housing, Residence Life and Community Engagement. This is a 12 month live on campus job and will be provided an apartment in Hall 5.

Responsibilities ADMINISTRATION/STAFF SUPERVISION - Responsible for the selection, training, and supervision of the residence hall staff specific administrative tasks and functions for the residence hall and the overall residential life program.

    Meet bi-weekly with each Area Coordinator (AC) to assess hall environments, student concerns and behaviors, community trends, and programs. Provide goal setting, mid-year evaluation, and year-end evaluation for each AC. Train ACs in techniques and methods for instituting ongoing constructive evaluations of staff. Coordinate student staff training/development/recognition. Assist ACs in responding to student issues, including roommate conflicts and physical, emotional, identity, or psychological concerns. Promote staff teamwork and coordinate staff duty/ area coverage. Support the development of residential learning communities. Directly oversee the AC on call process. Advise and assist hall management staffs in responding to concerning incidents or potential policy violations in and around the residence halls. Regular interaction with residents, Area Coordinators, Graduate Assistants, Resident Assistants during evenings and weekends in support of a culture of involvement and engagement. Oversees hiring, disciplinary documentation, and terminations of full-time and part-time staff members including students. Oversees recruitment, selection and training with the selection and training of all student staff members as needed.
  • Review graduate and undergraduate staff GPAs each semester to insure alignment with Residence Life policy.
  • Assistance in coordinate the housing assignments process with the Assignment Coordinator in the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Respond to campus concerns via a rotating "on call" schedule and act as central campus contact in absence of Director. Coordinate fall, spring, and summer student check-in and checkout system for all residence halls on two campuses. Aid in strategic planning for the Housing and Residence Life department. Adjudicate violations of college policy and document through the Maxient Conduct system.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - collaborate with institutional partners and resources for the continued development and support of students, staff, faculty, and others.

    Be accessible, visible and present during all check-in and check-out dates.
  • Attend staff-planned community development activities and educational events.
  • Promote recognition and appreciation of students and staff.
  • Create vision and goals for side of campus in which they oversee.
  • Promote an inclusive community through role modeling, challenging others, and emphasizing respect
  • Participate in divisional committees, search committees, training and development opportunities
  • Serve as a source of information about college and its resources to students, staff, faculty, families, and others.
GENERAL PROCESSES - participate in overall management of residence life through leadership in departmental and divisional processes.

    Serve as a judicial hearing officer and support the divisional protocol regarding the student code of conduct.
  • Assist with the development, planning and implementation of RA training, including in-service training.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation as it pertains to Housing and Residence Life responsibilities. Participate in the recruitment and selection processes for student and professional staff. Assist with most aspects of the housing selection process for new and returning students. Attend and participate in weekly Housing and Residence Life office meetings, Student Affairs meetings, retreats, and other gatherings as needed. Complete weekly and annual reports.
  • Performs other administrative functions as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
Required Qualifications

A master's degree in an appropriate field within student affairs, preferably higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field

Two years of graduate assistant or professional experience in a college housing/residence life setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with or ability to learn, Maxient, StarRez and Banner database systems

An NCAA Division II school, Albany State's intercollegiate sports include men's football, basketball, baseball, track and field, cross-country and women's basketball, volleyball, cross-country and track and field.

A historically black institution, Albany State was founded in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute and supported by private religious organizations. It remained privately supported through 1917, when it began to receive state support and became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. It continued to grow and in 1932, when the Board of Regents was established, it became part of the University System of Georgia. The mission was expanded in 1943, and it became a four-year college and assumed the name Albany State College. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program and in 1996 its name was changed to Albany State University.
