Location

Our West Campus is located at 2400 Gillionville Road, Albany, GA 31707. Our East Campus is located at 504 College Drive, Albany, GA 31705. The Human Resources office for both campuses is located on the West Campus in Building K, Suite 111.

Job Summary The Academic Advisor is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience for the students to increase student retention, success and completion. The advisor will facilitate advising and registration their assigned student populations, ensure that students are connected with student support services and activities, and assist students with goal setting and adjustment to university life. The Academic Advisor will provide continuous communication and follow-up to maximize goal attainment and student success. The work of the Academic Advisor involves participating in student orientation activities, working closely with stakeholders across campus to build collaborative relationships, remaining current in the university's academic policies and program maps through training attendance, and advising, registering, and mentoring students. The Academic Advisor will serve as the student's first point of contact for questions and/or concerns about university life and will work to ensure their students are informed about campus opportunities, services, and activities. The Academic Advisor will participate in campaigns designed to identify and proactively intervene with at-risk students, as well as pre-registration and advising campaigns, and new student orientation days utilizing innovations and technologies as required. This position requires some evening, weekend, and extended hour work at peak times during the academic season.

Responsibilities The Academic Advisor is responsible for the integration of new students into university life and the on-going advisement and mentoring of continuing students. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    Serve as the first point of contact for questions and/or concerns for assigned students. Advise and register assigned student populations ensuring accurate course registrations and advisement that will lead to shortened time to degree and student success. Participate in early alert, pre-registration, and other intervention strategies to proactively intervene with students as needed to ensure success. Remain informed of university policies, processes, and activities in order to better and more accurately connect students with appropriate resources and campus personnel. Remain informed of university programs and program course maps, as well as Board of Regents policies, to ensure accurate advising and course registration. Utilize to its fullest potential technologies and processes made available by the university for academic advising and student success. Participate fully in on-going and consistent training to remain current in advising, mentoring, and student success best practices. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or a minimum of three years’ experience in student advising required

Proficient in the use of desktop technologies such as Microsoft applications and comfortable learning and adapting to new technologies.

Organization

Albany State University is a four-year institution in southwest Georgia offering undergraduate and graduate liberal arts and professional degree programs, and a wide range of outreach programs to the community. Albany State University is located in Albany, a progressive city of 100,000, on a 206-acre campus featuring impressive new buildings. Both traditional and non-traditional students make up the more than 4,000 students who attend Albany State. They come primarily from southwest and middle Georgia, Atlanta, other states in the U.S., and several foreign countries. The average student age is 24 and about 40 percent of the students live in on-campus housing.

Albany State offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs, of which the most popular majors are biology, criminal justice, computer science, middle-grades education, business administration and nursing. The University offers six advanced degrees: the master of science in criminal justice, master of public administration, master of business administration, master of science in nursing, master of education in 11 majors, and an education specialist degree. The university also offers the Board of Regents' engineering transfer program and the dual degree program in engineering with Georgia Tech.

Students at Albany State stay busy after class by participating in 59 clubs and organizations including bands, choirs, religious groups, honor societies, several major Greek and honor sororities and fraternities, and ROTC. An NCAA Division II school, Albany State's intercollegiate sports include men's football, basketball, baseball, track and field, cross-country and women's basketball, volleyball, cross-country and track and field.

A historically black institution, Albany State was founded in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute and supported by private religious organizations. It remained privately supported through 1917, when it began to receive state support and became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. It continued to grow and in 1932, when the Board of Regents was established, it became part of the University System of Georgia. The mission was expanded in 1943, and it became a four-year college and assumed the name Albany State College. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program and in 1996 its name was changed to Albany State University.
