Reporting to the Manager, Finance and Operations, the Assistant Manager, Finance and Operations supports the Manager by providing financial and administrative support to the Manager and the Chair. The position manages the day-to-day operations and finances of the department, is responsible for the administration of the CFI grants and supports principal investigators in the department with major purchases, and prepares and manages the annual request for sessional instructors. The Assistant Manager is responsible for the management of USW staff in the department. Represents the Manager at meetings or on committees, acts in the Manager’s absence.

This position also provides support to faculty and students in the Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistical programs from an employment perspective and works closely with the faculty advisors to develop programs that will make students marketable. The Assistant Manager analyzes the industry to determine the skills employers are seeking, and communicates information to the undergraduate counsellor so that students can be advised on which programs are most suitable. They also provide more complex advising for students referred by the undergraduate counsellor.

This position strives to position the department as a leader in computer science, mathematics and statistical education; establishes an environment of continual evaluation and improvement that encourages creativity and innovation and is responsive to the changing needs and diversity of the academic programs, students and labour market.


University degree in business, accounting or finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Accounting designation an asset.

Five (5) years’ related experience, including three years in a post-secondary institution. Experience coaching and mentoring staff. Demonstrated experience in managing projects from inception to completion. Demonstrated experience building networks and developing relationships with external partners and industry. Experience working in a financial role with stringent policies and procedures. Experience working with the University’s Guide to Financial Management an asset. Experience advising students an asset. Experience managing in a unionized environment or supervising staff an asset.

Strong proficiency with personal computers and related software, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills and the ability to write concise and informative reports and proposals. Excellent problem-solving skills. Good conflict resolution skills. Strong analytical skills. Strong financial skills. Working knowledge of a Financial Information System, a Research Information System, and a Human Resources Information System. Knowledge of the University’s Administrative Management System (AMS) including FIS, RIS and HRIS an asset.

A good working knowledge of University policies and procedures, legislation and external guidelines such as taxation and funding agency guidelines. Ability to keep current with trends, identify needs and implement solutions. Commitment to enhancing the student experience. Ability to constantly improve on the job with minimal direction. Ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines, ability to multi-task. Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders. Good initiative, ability to be a self-starter.
