Job Summary: The Student Life Assistant Director I provides oversight and planning for the development, implementation, and delivery of one or more programs, services, or activities within a department. May supervise professional staff. Part of the Student Life Career Progression Plan.

Additional Department Summary: The Assistant Director of the Office of Student Involvement serves as a vital member of the professional team tasked with supporting the promotion and vision of a student population who is engaged and learning to cultivate passion in their area of future influence. This position reports to the Director of Student Involvement. Providing support for university community members, as well as members and leaders of the over 650 registered student organizations at UA, the position directly supervises the Coordinator of Student Involvement, oversees the University’s organization registration processes, coordinates honor society selections, serves as primary advisor to student leader teams within the office (The SOURCE Board, the Coordinating Council for Honor Societies). This position works to create opportunities for individual student engagement and cultivates a strong culture of involvement exploration among the general student population through intentional programs and services. In addition, this position provides support for organization advisors through coordinated training and resource support, oversees the office’s mediation/conflict resolution process for student organizations, and coordinates office outreach, as well as a variety of office events and programs. The position is also responsible for being up to date on trends and opportunities specific to their specific role and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. The position is responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required expectations, training, or tasks and has some program budget tracking responsibility.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher and three (3) years of professional experience in student programming/activities, advising student groups and organizations, student involvement, and other student-oriented activities

Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in leadership, organizational, communication, and decision-making in an independent work environment; Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the role of students and student development; Demonstrated knowledge and experience in student programming, outreach, and student leadership development; Ability to advise, teach, and coach University students; Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills (written, oral, and presentation), a collaborative communication style, strong interpersonal skills, and proven ability to work with sensitive and confidential information; Strong prioritization and multitasking skills, including ability to manage multiple priorities and willingness to adjust personal schedule to needs of programming, and the necessity to observe, participate in, and evaluate programs; Demonstrated analytical skills including, including ability to gather and analyze complex data and situations in order to draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, students, faculty, staff, alumni and external agencies; Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with computers and basic software applications; Demonstrated knowledge and ability in budget development and monitoring; Demonstrated personnel management experience and ability to recruit, hire, supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate professional and student staff; Ability to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness and understanding/valuing others, demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities, interacting effectively with a diverse group of individuals, and fostering equity and inclusion; Demonstrated experience working within a higher education (university or college) environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree and three (3) years in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related field. Graduate or professional experience in student programming/activities, advising student groups and organizations, student involvement, and other student-oriented activities; Ability to work nights and weekends, on occasion.
