OLAR has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Veterinary Technician Assistant position.

Nature of Work:

The purpose of this position is to provide routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver.  

Duties: 

This full-time, university staff (unclassified) Veterinary Technician Assistant position will provide support for the research animal health care program with a predominant emphasis on rodent research support with the potential to include work with larger animals, including surgical and anesthesia support with training, as skills and competency are demonstrated. The position will perform initial evaluations of sick and injured animals and work with investigators/veterinarians on treatment; create, maintain and monitor all documents related to animal treatments; schedule rooms and reserve medical procedure equipment; provide technical services and assistance in rodent anesthesia, organs, blood and tissue collection; administer experimental agents and animal euthanasia; collect post mortem tissues for evaluation; perform diagnostic laboratory evaluations and tests; perform sample collection and shipment to diagnostic laboratories; create diagnostic reports, records and billing for diagnostic services; perform physical exams and treatments of large animals; monitor and maintain assigned support room(s); and perform other duties as assigned. 

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $38,000 to $42,000.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

1 year experience in animal health or veterinary health field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Veterinary assistant certification, associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, animal science, veterinary/animal health, or equivalent

• Current certification with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)

• One year of experience caring for, feeding, or providing health care for animals in a veterinary clinic, laboratory, breeding, or boarding facility.

• Experience working with rodents

• Experience working in an animal research facility.

• Must be willing and able to frequently lift and carry 50 lbs, with or without accommodation.

• Must possess and maintain a current State of Colorado Driver’s License by the time of hire.

NOTE: This position has been designated as essential personnel, “Subject to call 24 hours per day, seven days per week” and may be required to carry a pager. Position may also be required to “Stay over late” or “Come in early” to “Cover” shifts, as needed and may be required to respond to any emergencies as needed. If hired, you will be required to provide effective off-hours phone contact info for emergency call-in purposes.
