Job Description
The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) is currently seeking a Director of Audio-Visual Services (Director of Instructional Technology) in the Office of Academic Affairs. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Instructional Design and Technology, the Director of Audio-Visual Services provides strategic direction for the school’s audio visual (AV) and collaboration technology services that support the school’s mission. This position has primary responsibility for the implementation and management of AV infrastructure and collaboration technologies (e.g., Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Skype) technologies associated with the delivery and management of the school’s academic programs and business operations.

This position provides management and operational oversight for technologies used to support the management and delivery of the School’s academic programs (e.g., Mediasite, Webex, Zoom, etc.). Providing subject-matter expertise in AV and collaboration technologies, the director supports the development, implementation, and management of goals associated with the School’s educational mission and strategic plan. Established objectives for the unit are achieved in part through the coordinated efforts of others, including the direct management, engagement, and development of subordinate staff. 

The Director is responsible for coordination with other School and university entities that support operations. This includes oversight and monitoring of financial contracts and procurement and legal and policy compliance. Supporting business and academic operations, the Director develops processes, procedures, and policies in collaboration with other School offices that support and deliver academic programs.

    Provides leadership on the strategic direction and support of audio-visual (AV) technologies used to support face-to-face, hybrid, and online programs. Collaborates with leadership and technical staff to ensure delivery of academic programs.

    Provides strategic direction and leadership for all aspects of AV technologies in order to maintain their efficient operations, including providing advice, guidance, and support on AV equipment and collaborative technology tools.

    Consults with upper-level administrators on a regular basis in setting strategic goals and the improvement of policies and procedures associated with academic and business operations. 

    Effectively communicates with School and campus leadership on issues pertaining to the unit’s functions.

    Directs the design, development, and customization of AV technology solutions for digital signage, conference rooms, and classrooms meeting the operational needs of the unit and school.

    Develops and facilitates training and the development of resources to expand skills and usage of AV and collaboration technologies that meets the needs and goals of end-users.  

    Develops, documents, and implements policies and procedures in association with the Office of Academic Affairs.

    Proactively represents the school and department through participation in campus meetings and special projects, as well as UMB on an external basis with USM headquarters and other system-wide units.

    Provides quality assurance on the technical operation of classroom/facility audio visual equipment (e.g., Crestron control systems, Mediasite, Webex Room Kits, etc.).

    Manages procurement and contracts for AV hardware and licenses including license agreements, hardware and service contracts, and maintenance agreements. Negotiates and provides quotes for departments/units requesting AV hardware and/or services.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in field and/or related field, such as film/video, graphic or instructional design/technology, information technology or a related field. Master's degree preferred. EXPERIENCE: Seven (7) years of experience in proficient use of audio/visual, multimedia, video production, or IT education/training. Advanced knowledge and experience on relevant computer technologies (display, audio, control), systems design, installation, and repair preferred. SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience at a management/leadership level. CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE: N/A. OTHER: N/A. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
        Experience in an academic health system or institution of higher education.     Qualification or training as a Certified Technology Specialist (CTS).     Current knowledge of AV signal transport technologies and AV networking protocols.     Experience in the deployment and commissioning of Crestron control systems.     Experience implementing captioning and assistive listening devices to ensure inclusive course delivery and the implementation of educational accommodations associated with individual accommodations approved through university educational support and disability services.     Experience managing AV and collaboration technology in traditional, hybrid, and distance courses is essential. This includes experience using a wide range of computer technology, multiple hardware platforms, multimedia and other physical infrastructure related to distance learning capability.
    Effective written and verbal communication skills. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to gather and compile reports for multiple audiences. Works cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting and developing partnerships with key groups and individuals. Demonstrates pleasant and positive interactions with others to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers. Proficiency with MS Office (with advanced expertise in Excel, Word and Power Point) and Visio, HTML, and Adobe products. Proficiency with Course/Learning Management Systems and Collaboration technologies (e.g., Webex, Zoom, MS Teams, Skype). Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its application in higher education. Skill in consultation and change management.
