Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide working supervisory and technical guidance to 6 to 20 employees engaged in the housekeeping maintenance of university buildings. Responsible for staff supervision, oversight, coaching, training, hiring, etc. Duties include cleaning/disinfecting activities in athletic venues, auditoriums, classrooms, laboratories, offices, hallways, restrooms and stairways. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to performing supply deliveries, cleaning and routine checks on Department vehicles, building locking/unlocking, raise/lower flags, respond to emergency calls, operating heavy cleaning equipment, removing trash and recyclables, dusting, changing light bulbs, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, offices, labs, surfaces, light fixtures, etc. Reliability and dependability are crucial for this position to ensure that early morning work demands are completed in a timely manner.

Day Shift working hours are 6:00am to 2:30pm, Monday through Friday including weekend work. This schedule will be based on Department needs, be flexible and may change to include adjusted shift hours, working on Saturdays and Sundays depending on workloads and Department needs. Schedule adjustments, weekend and holiday work, responding to after-hours, weekend and holiday emergencies as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

-Position requires considerable knowledge of established cleaning procedures and techniques; knowledge of purpose and application of products and equipment used in large, institutional, housekeeping operations.
-Ability to supervise, manage and motivate a small to medium size work force, responsible for employee supervision, oversight, hiring, training, coaching, disciplinary actions and perform other duties as assigned.-Provide coverage in the absence of the Lead shift Supervisor and Day Shift staff. Must be reliable, dependable, organized and have a positive attitude.-Ability to perform medium to heavy physically demanding work, lift a minimum of 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time while working, lift, sweep, mop, dust, climb steps and ladders, etc. and operate a variety of commercial cleaning equipment. This may require standing and performing medium to heavy physical work for the entire eight-hour shift.
-Position requires use of cleaning chemicals, close/visual attention to details, the ability to recognize and correct cleaning/work problems, work in a face-paced environment and be aware of safety and security conditions.
-Ability to read and comprehend labels and instructions regarding cleaning matters and equipment, safely operate cleaning equipment and how to properly mix and use chemicals for cleaning.- Assignments are not building-specific and may or may not be in an environment with heating or air conditioning; exposure to outside elements when performing some job duties such as building unlocking/locking, supply deliveries, waste disposal or cleaning entrance ways and sidewalks of trash, dirt, ice or snow, etc.
-Must be able to report to work during a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow and ice; position is designated as “Mandatory” during adverse/severe weather conditions and is expected to work according to University and Departmental guidelines.-Must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with others to encourage and support communication, teamwork and facilitate work.- Must be able to work independently or on a team, with or without close supervision and communicate with and deal effectively with various groups, co-workers, clients, or individuals being served.
-Must be able to understand and follow both oral and written instructions, directions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. Strong communications skills are critical for this supervisory position.
-Position requires close attention to details and the ability to recognize and correct cleaning problems; requires alertness to safety and security conditions.
-Ability to perform a variety of computer/electronic functions including but not limited to sending/receiving emails, on-line maintenance requests, correspondence, completing on-line timesheets, training, evaluations, building schedules, etc. Must have working knowledge of Excel and Word software.
-Perform routine cleaning and inspections on Department vehicles, process supply orders and make deliveries to janitor closets on campus; conduct fire extinguisher and bio-bucket inspections; inspect and re-stock Department first aid kit, respond to radio calls and emergency situations as needed, perform building unlocking/locking, raise/lower flags, trouble shoot, repair and maintain Department equipment.-Must have and maintain a valid NC Driver’s License and reliable transportation.-The above description is representative of the duties and responsibilities required of this position. Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Training and Education at the entry level: Graduation from High School or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with 3 to 5 years of direct experience with the supervision and management of front-line staff in medium to large academic, institutional or commercial settings, preferably in a cleaning and/or maintenance environment. Previous knowledge of and experience with large building cleaning practices and use of industrial type cleaning equipment is also preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a high school education diploma or General Education Diplomas (GED). Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
