Research Associate IIIThe applicant will be a materials synthesis specialist in a ceramics fabrication laboratory. Their role is to develop materials solutions through powder processing for deliverables to industry sponsors or funding agencies. They will require both physical specimens, and also supporting characterization either generated by the applicant or supporting students. In the long-term, developing connections as a co-PI with other internal university PIs would be essential for successful funding.



Qualifications
Job Function/Responsibilities:

  • Training and supervising both undergraduate and graduate students primarily on Pulsed Electric Current Sintering, and providing pedagogy in refractory metals and ceramics materials engineering.
  • Upgrading or revising ESH, Export Controlled Inventory, quality assurance (QA) and data flow, laboratory inventory and possible implementation of Radiological Safety.
  • The position demands the ability to mainstream and coordinate data flow between different projects and their associated sponsors and collaborators via emails, reports and publications.
  • Developing connections as a co-Pl with other internal university Pis and supporting proposals with laboratory resources. Position will conduct independent research on materials solutions through powder processing. They will publish results in peer reviewed journals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of processing, synthesis - especially diffusion based processing. Qualitative knowledge of displacement reactions needed.
  • Knowledge of how high temperature and special equipment operates, including consequences of removing dependencies and "what if' scenarios on equipment.
  • Skill in controlling variables needed for specific outcomes in synthesis
  • Ability to coordinate resources and personnel toward project outcomes
  • Ability to converge and eliminate synthesis variables toward single outcome
  • Ability to write scientific literature
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ceramic and refractory materials
  • Solid-state materials
Required level/type of experience and/or years of experience:

  • Master's degree in a materials or chemistry synthesis field plus three years' experience, or a current or pending PhD in (preferably ceramics) synthesis related work.
