Research Assistant
The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) is a center within the Department of Population, Family and Reproduction Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. We are seeking a Research Assistant who will work under the supervision of the Center Director, Dr. Christina Bethell, and will collaborate on innovative Center and grant-funded projects to advance evidence based policy and practice and effectively engage families and communities in efforts to promote healthy child development and improve health outcomes for all children, youth and families in the United States and beyond.

The Research Assistant will play a central role in the day to day operations of the CAHMI and its primary projects, including the CAHMI's data-driven and web-based (1) National Maternal and Child Health Data Resource Center (DRC) (www.childhealthdata.org), (2) Community and Family Engagement Research Network (C-FERN) “Cycle of Engagement” (COE) model and tools and (3) Maternal and Child Health Online Measurement Compendium and other related research projects.

With new funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the CAHMI seeks to continue to develop, refine, implement, and disseminate the Early Childhood Cycle of Engagement (EC_COE), which includes pre-visit planning, family-led online Well Visit Planner, post-encounter family-led online quality assessment Promoting Healthy Development Survey, and the within-encounter Personalized, Connected Encounter model of care delivery. This project will focus on diffusion and continued tests of implementation and to move toward broader scale dissemination amidst ongoing improvement. In addition, this project will integrate the CAHMI's NSCH DRC to drive Title V systems change to promote integrated early childhood systems of care with family engagement and equity at the center.

The successful candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, generate ideas and processes to complete work and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with changing priorities required. They must have excellent time management, work planning, written and verbal communications skills and strong conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making and detail orientation skills. Also required is the capacity to efficiently identify and summarize research literature, policy reports and related resources, maintain center director resume and require faculty webpage, support online course logistics, progress reports and IRB submissions.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Center Research & Service:
  • Efficiently discover, synthesize and strategically present background research, materials and presentation resources required to engage external partners, advisors and funders regarding the evidence-based Cycle of Engagement Model and Tools. Support development of references lists and the formatting and submission of research papers, research presentation abstracts and new grant applications. Support the team's research initiatives through coordinating and conducting interviews and draft a state data profile laying out the need, opportunity and relevance of the CAHMI's COE for state Medicaid, Title V, Child Welfare and other agencies using the NSCH data as well as other data resources and research. Help draft presentations and webinar materials for conferences, special presentations, and external stakeholder meetings; coordinate team conference attendance, including travel logistics, and exhibiting and presentation needs, systematically review and track changes from study partners on research papers and related reports; double check data for the center's online data query resources; enter updated information to the center's maternal and child health measurement compendium and assist in developing short descriptions of measures and synthesis summaries related to available measures and priority gaps.


Center Director Administrative & Educational Support:
  • Maintain center director resume and required faculty webpage, support online course logistics. Support center director as needed with scheduling, obtaining research papers and maintaining positive relationships and communications with research partners and advisors.


Maintain Clear Work Plan:
  • Maintain clear, outcomes and results based personal work plan and continuously update work plans in collaboration with team members to complete key results and milestones most essential to achieve priority outcomes.
  • Proactively seek out required information needed to establish and effectively achieve work results and outcomes and maintain strong communication and problem solving to apprise and coordinate work with the center director and team members.
  • Prepare for and actively participate and help facilitate both internal team and external partner meetings, ensuring follow up steps are identified and achieved.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Public Policy, or related field.
  • Related experience.
  • Knowledge of programs, policies, and data sources related to MCH, and specifically related to early childhood.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to work with a wide variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Public Policy, or related field.

  • Particularly in the area of understanding policies, payment and research related to the provision of primary care services to young children and families and the nature of the providers and requirements pertinent to our success in advancing the use and impact of our research to meet grant funded work goals.

Starting Salary Range: $16.42 - $22.57/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
