Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Digital Engagement is a key team member in the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG), who manages annual giving appeals on behalf of Johns Hopkins Medicine, employing a strong focus on digital engagement strategies. The role designs and composes direct mail solicitations, electronic solicitations, phone-a-thon materials, and other marketing materials for the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM), as well as manages and maintains social media, online giving forms and various digital media efforts.

This person manages timelines and approval processes with vendors and mail houses, and works alongside other members of the OMAG team to produce high quality annual giving efforts. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, highly creative and collaborative, with considerable skills in message and content development, and have a solid sense for design—including implementing the Johns Hopkins brand—and demonstrated experience producing high-quality, engaging, and effective communications.

Specific Responsibilities:

Content creation 50%
  • Brainstorm, create and design effective and attractive communications pieces to engage donors, prospects, alumni, and friends. Serve as graphic designer as needed/requested.
  • Assist in the drafting and set up of variable text for multiple annual giving appeals per year.
  • Design social media content relevant to annual appeals; graphics creation; backend platform management of Aspire crowdfunding page; image creation and edits.
  • Define key performance indicators and implement measurement, analytics, and reporting methods to gauge success of digital and social engagement tactics; report high-level takeaways to leadership; interpret results to colleagues; and implement insights into future actions.
  • Stay informed of emerging social media and digital platforms, technologies and trends; identify new opportunities to creatively engage donors digitally, including, but not limited to email, crowdfunding, digital dialogs and text to give.
  • Collaborate with other communications colleagues within FJHM, DAR, JHM and JHHS to create best practices and exchange ideas of emerging trends.


  • Project Management 35%
    • Manage and collaborate with vendors, freelance designers or use in-house tools to produce annual giving appeals. Serve as the primary liaison with 2-3 client development offices (DOFFs) on behalf of the Office of Medical Annual Giving. Conduct regular communication and hold DOFF clients responsible for meeting deadlines on providing copy and data feedback.

    Administrative 15%
    • Assist the Sr. Associate Director of Medical Annual Giving and Digital Strategy to align the office's communications and outreach functions.
    • Maintain and keep current OMAG's creative libraries.
    • Participate and present in appropriate departmental and client-based meetings.
    • Support professional growth, skills development and career development by using DAR and University resources and training. Maintain knowledge in our donor database.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree.
    • Two years related experience.
    • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Three or more years of relevant experience
    • Experience in digital journalism or marketing
    • Skills in photography, or videography
    • Experience conducting interviews to develop digital and social media content


    Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
    • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, In-Design, Spark, Illustrator or Cava) as well as ability to learn new software.
    • Superior attention to detail; ability to think creatively, strategically, and analytically.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, concise copy for digital and print materials; strong editing and proofreading skills.
    • Solid understanding of principles of design; demonstrated experience working within established brand standards. Proficient in creative design platforms (Adobe Creative Cloud).
    • Knowledge of and fluency within social media platforms and communications in a professional setting.
    • Knowledge of digital and social media trends; understanding of measurement tools (e.g. Google Analytics, Sprout Social) and how to translate data insights into action.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including alumni, staff, and students and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
    • Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving, time management, and project management skills.
    • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously juggle several assignments.
    • A strong desire to associate with Johns Hopkins University and to champion the mission and values of the institution.

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
