This position is open until filled with an initial candidate review to take place after July 1, 2022.
The Communications Officer reports directly to the CEO of the SDSU Research Foundation and is responsible for the overall internal and external communications of the organization, including communication with SDSU principal investigators, employees, university leadership, board members, other campus communicators, funding agencies, the media, and other internal and external constituents.
The communications officer is responsible for supervision of a public affairs/communications specialist and a part-time administrative assistant.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President/CEO, the Communications Officer is responsible for initiating, developing, implementing (and/or overseeing implementation of) the overall communications of SDSU Research Foundation. The focus is on providing consistent, mission-focused communications and assisting the CEO with communications and strategy.
Responsibilities
The Communications Officer is responsible for but not limited to:
I. Communications Duties (85%)
Develop, monitor and review communications with and between all constituents including:
Media Relations, including Issues and Crisis Management
Executive Communication
Publications/Promotional Products
- Prepare and coordinate publications and promotional materials.
- Coordinate preparation of SDSURF Annual Report.
- Develop and arrange for use of video, text, PPT, photography
- Review orientation materials for new employees.
- Prepare core section, cover and CEO message of the General Fund Budget document; review final draft of GFB
- Prepare fact sheets, brochures, booth displays, and other informational items publicizing SDSURF services and SDSU research, as initiated and/or upon request
- Collaborate with DRI communications director to produce annual research highlights publication; identify faculty to profile, create profiles, obtain photos/images, work with featured PIs, create charts. Work with SDSU reprographics on production, work with VPs and deans to disseminate as appropriate.
- Oversee preparation of the annual listing of awards received by SDSU, including contacting PIs to obtain photographs of their projects, reviewing final draft, disseminating to campus, posting on home page.

- Oversee and initiate website development, including initiating ideas for, arranging for and preparing additional content; developing, implementing, and monitoring policy; ensuring content is current and legally compliant (access); and consulting with information systems about graphics and design if changes are to be made.
- Prepare, arrange to have put on the Web, and update as needed, information for “About Us,” including (but not limited to) brief bios (about 400 words) and a photo of each management council member; new annual reports; and new charts and graphs of annual proposal/award activity.
- Work with directors to obtain current staffing information to maintain accuracy of Org Charts on web
- Work with directors to update information on their pages as needed.
- On behalf of AVP/ED approve requested additions/changes to Web site
Promotion of SDSURF
- Assist with promoting SDSURF programs, including identifying key performance measurements and volume indicators; collecting available historical data; monitoring annual updates. Ensure data is appropriately disseminated, valued and understood. Initiate and participate in planning for surveys.
- Work with executive assistant to arrange introductory meetings for key SDSURF managers and new university administrators including deans and chairs.
- Assist with special events coordinated by the special assistant for executive affairs.
- With Public Affairs and Communications Specialist, develop and oversee workshop program/calendar
- Oversee SDSURF social media platforms, provide visuals and copy as needed

II. Information Dissemination Duties (10%)
- Disseminate general grant information related to sponsors, new policies, federal and state regulations, federal/state budgets, events and issues in higher education
- Oversee preparation, production and dissemination of reports related to proposal and award information including weekly reports to university (Grants of the Week), monthly and quarterly reports and other reports as requested by university and research foundation managers.

Qualifications
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of SDSURF and SDSU to the fullest extent possible
- Knowledge of the higher education grant environment
- Knowledge of computerized systems available to serve this function
- Knowledge of the principles, problems, and methods of administration, including organizational and fiscal management
- Knowledge of higher education issues, national terms related to education, and specific knowledge of SDSURF, SDSU, CSU system policies and procedures
- Ability to manage employees, provide leadership, feedback on performance and have disciplinary conversations
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships internally and externally, ability to speak and write effectively
- Ability to plan and organize; leadership and creativity; ability to collect and evaluate data
- Ability to provide positive leadership and service in the stimulation of research activities, facilitation of proposals, and the generation of funding
- Ability to maintain and cultivate key relationships with the VP for Research, president’s office, Stratcomm, deans, PIs and RF Management Council
- Ability to develop professionally in the communications field
- Ability to provide leadership to contribute to and carry out new ideas and existing programs
- Ability to motivate others (many of whom have other pressing priorities) to participate in various projects and to provide information and data.

- Ability to apply writing/editing skills to computer technology skills (spreadsheets, working with financial data, research information).

Experience/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, or related field or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
- Four-years of related experience; two of which in a progressively responsible supervisory or management role
- Demonstrated outstanding writing and editing experience
- Demonstrated experience in internal/executive communications
- Ability to effectively manage crisis and confidential communications
