Position Summary:
This is a full-time (academic year appointment), tenure-track or tenured faculty position for the College of Law’s Moscow location. The successful candidate will be hired with a rank (assistant, associate, or full professor) and tenure status (tenure-track or tenured) commensurate with their experience. This position involves developing and directing a Native American law clinic at the College of Law. The faculty member will have wide latitude to work with local, regional, and/or national tribal communities and organizations to shape the vision, focus, and pedagogical direction of the clinic. Examples of possible clinics include, but are not limited to, a tribal court clinic, a tribal economic development clinic, a tribal family mediation clinic, a tribal governance clinic, or a tribal natural resources clinic. Candidates that are interested in interfacing with the College’s emphasis programs and that can bolster the College’s circular goals in Indian child welfare, domestic relations, Native American natural resources, and/or tribal economic development are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be part of the UI Native American Law (“NAL”) Program and will help to develop program goals and support program students. The candidate will directly coordinate with the NAL Program Director to ensure broader programmatic support of the development and implementation of the clinic, as well as to share leadership roles in other NAL Program projects and to advance NAL Program strategic goals. In addition to supervising clinic students, the faculty member will also be responsible for teaching an additional course in a related subject, developing mentoring relationships with students, advising students on curricular and co-curricular activities, and developing a scholarly, outreach, and engagement agenda that will enrich the community. The faculty member will also represent the law school through attendance at scholarly and clinical teaching conferences, as well as through publication in national and/or international scholarly journals, which may include interdisciplinary placements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- a J.D. from an accredited school or the equivalent.
- a distinguished academic record;
- at least five years of post-J.D. practice and/or clerking experience;
- active membership in at least one state bar and ability to obtain Idaho State Bar admission as a supervising attorney by November 1, 2023;
- a record or the promise of excellence in teaching;
- a record or the promise of excellence in scholarship;
- a record or the promise of excellence in fostering an inclusive learning environment; and
- experience and/or demonstrated interest with tribal engagement and/or working within tribal communities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- More than two years of post-J.D. practice or full-time teaching experience in the law clinic setting and/or serving clients in Native American law related matters.
- Experience and/or demonstrated interest in fields that support other NAL Program research goals (natural resources, water law, treaty rights, climate change, family law, violence against women, community resilience).
- Demonstrated success in grant writing.
- Ability to work with minimal direct supervision, both independently and within a group.
- Experience with interdisciplinary approaches and working as part of an interdisciplinary research and/or project team.
