The Boston University Environmental Health and Safety office is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

This position supports the Chief Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety Officer in Medical Physics and Radiation Safety compliance related activities at Boston University (BU) and Boston Medical Center (BMC). Primary duties consist of assisting with Quality Control (QC) of radiation generating devices and lead protective apparel. They also support radiation safety inspections, dosimetry and emergency response programs.

Required Skills

Minimum qualifications are either a bachelor’s degree (preferred) in a “hard” science (e.g., physics, engineering, or equivalent) or an associate degree with licensed radiologic technologist certification. Direct experience will be considered as a substitute for the education. At least 1 year experience working with x-ray equipment preferred

Minimum of 3 years related experience for the Senior Specialist level and 1 year for the Specialist level.

The candidate must be computer literate and proficient with common software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Programing skills a plus. They must also be self-motivated, have solid written and verbal communication skills, be proficient in intermediate algebra and trigonometry, be detail oriented, and able to work as a team player. Must be able to lift test objects weighing up to 30 - 40 lbs.

This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire and on-site physical and medical surveillance upon hire.

ON CALL REQUIREMENTS: This position is required to participate in the EHS on-call emergency response program. When on-call, the incumbent serves as first responder and as such is responsible for exercising professional judgment to independently determine response phases and mobilization of internal and external resources (BPD, BFD, EMS, regulatory agencies). Compares and evaluates possible courses of action and makes a decision after various possibilities have been considered and has the authority to make an independent choice and decision, free from immediate direction or supervision. While on-call, this position will be responsible for responding to calls in all buildings and areas and as such, employment is contingent upon initial and continued successful background checks

Additional requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • OSHA's 40 hour hazardous waste operations and emergency response certification or ability to obtain in initial 90 days
  • Successful completion of a pre-placement physical
  • This position serves as part of the EHS emergency response on-call team providing support 24/7 365 serving both Boston University and Boston Medical Center. EHS on-call staff must be able to respond to an incident location within one hour of notification and have a valid drivers license to use on-call response vehicle.
