Departmental Overview

The Cal Veteran Services Center, as part of the Independent Student Programs subcluster within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence provides individualized services for military affiliated students that supports their transition to the university, academic achievement, retention, graduation, and advancement toward career goals. Undergraduate and graduate military affiliated students often come from underrepresented, low income, first generation college student backgrounds, and also tend to pursue higher education later in life. Many of these pathways and lived experiences can increase the likelihood of experiencing personal and academic challenges while completing degree programs. Services within the Cal Veteran Services Center include direct holistic academic counseling focused on a range of issues that include financial aid counseling and maximizing VA educational benefits, and assistance with identifying career and other opportunities after completing the Berkeley degree program. The Cal Veteran Services Center works to address academic and non-academic barriers-- both personal and institutional--that impact student access, inclusion, retention, and academic success.
