The Associate Chair for Administration (ACA) in the Department of Neurology partners with the Chair to develop a strategic vision to lead the Department to stellar performance in all missions: clinical care, education, research, and service and ensures departmental resource allocation in support of strategic priorities, with a focus on school and system alignment. The Associate Chair assumes substantial independent senior administrative authority in the Chair’s Office for leadership and innovative direction for the Department’s policy development and implementation of systems and initiatives to attain goals.

The Department of Neurology consists of more than 60 faculty members and 30 advanced practice providers engaged in all SOM and Health System missions. There are currently divisions of Child Neurology, Cognitive Neurology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neurocritical Care, Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular Disease, Neuro-oncology, Precision Neurology and Neurogenetics, Sleep Medicine, Vascular Neurology and Stroke. The Department provided hospital services to UNC Medical Center, neurocritical care services at UNC Rex Hospital and remote neurodiagnostic services to several contracted hospitals throughout NC. Ambulatory care sites include Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Carey (Panther Creek) NC. Electronic consults are provided to other UNC Health system providers and teleneurology services for inpatients, emergency department patients and ambulatory patients are currently in development. Extensive cross departmental collaborations with the Departments of Genetics, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Radiology and Rehabilitation Medicine are key factors in our ability to attain our clinical care goals.

The Neurology Department manages a Neurosciences Clinical Trials Unit which conducts a large portfolio of human subjects research studies in collaboration with faculty leadership. Department of Neurology research is supported by four full time research faculty as well as several NIH funded clinician scientists. The educational mission includes undergraduate, GME and CME focused programs including residency programs in Adult and Child Neurology and fellowship programs in Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neurocritical Care, MS, Neuromuscular Diseases, Sleep Medicine and Stroke.

The culture of the UNC Department of Neurology tends toward a distributed leadership approach and consensus driven decision making with extensive use of faculty committees to determine policy and address complex issues. This requires that all leaders in the Department have strong communication skills and a commitment to overcommunicate if needed to achieve consensus. Nevertheless, when rapid responses are required, the ACA and Chair will evaluate available data and provide needed decisions. As such, the Neurology ACA should have advanced skills in obtaining and analyzing financial data, clinical metrics and other data types needed for decision making of all types.

Minimum qualifications of an advanced degree, masters or higher (or foreign degree equivalent), and no less than 5 to 7 years of management-level experience in the full range of administrative and financial functions of an academic department or research center in a higher education, research, or health care setting. Candidates with 7 to 10 years of directly comparable experience may substitute for the required advanced degree in which case a bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and the requisite experience is mandatory.

Candidates should have five to ten years as a senior manager with experience in a medical practice or other health organization, ideally in an academic medical center. The Associate Chair must possess superior verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal behaviors, and the capacity to inspire confidence in his or her reasoning and decision-making.

The successful Associate Chair will be an experienced, intuitive, creative, and dynamic leader with superior interpersonal and problem-solving skills. S/he will have well-developed attributes of professionalism, leadership, communication, presentation abilities, superior organizational skills, as well as analytic expertise. Critical skills and knowledge required are focused but not limited to the following areas: program development and growth, strategic planning, customer service, patient/physician/staff satisfaction, quality improvement, marketing, public relations, physician recruitment, public speaking, financial management, operational leadership, and human resource management.
