The Center for Health, Work & Environment has an opening for a University Staff (unclassified) Grant Program Senior Professional.

Nature of Work

The Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) is a unique and collaborative graduate school that combines the collective expertise of three Colorado universities: the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz) in Aurora, Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in Greeley, Colorado. The Colorado School of Public Health is the only accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attracting top tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing a vital contribution towards ensuring our region’s health and wellbeing. The school’s faculty, staff, and students work together to reach underserved populations, share knowledge, and conduct innovative research and community service to actively address public health issues including chronic disease, access to healthcare, environmental threats, emerging infectious diseases, costly injuries, and more.

The Center for Health, Work and Environment (CHWE) at the Colorado School of Public Health conducts research, offers academic training to graduate and postdoctoral students, provides professional development courses and events, implements community-based public health projects, as well as pilot project research opportunities throughout the West. It is committed to partnering with community stakeholders who share the mission of improving the health, safety and wellbeing of workers, their families, and communities. As part of it’s diverse funding portfolio, the Center has two CDC/NIOSH-funded Centers: the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center (MAP ERC, T42) and the Center for Health, Work & Environment, a NIOSH Total Worker Health Center of Excellence (TWH, U19).

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health has several cutting-edge research and education initiatives. Educational degrees and programs include the MPH and DrPH degrees in Environmental & Occupational Health, Occupational & Environmental Medicine Residency and Fellowship programs, and Certificates in Total Worker Health and in Public Health Preparedness & Disaster Response. The Department’s goal is to expand their multi-disciplinary faculty and ability to conduct innovative, impactful research in Environmental and Occupational Health. The Department has a broad range of funded projects and sponsors.

The Grant Program Professional is responsible for the day-to-day management of all research and plays a major role in proactively anticipating related issues/problems, suggesting a range of options with an analysis of advantages and disadvantages, and recommending solutions to ColoradoSPH Principal Investigators and unit leaders. This position will be responsible for the grant support for the Center for Health, Work and Environment, and the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, both within the Colorado School of Public Health. It will work directly with the faculty and department personnel to administer research support activities, research administration, and assist in the development of research policy and procedures. It also serves as the primary liaison among ColoradoSPH Principal Investigators, the Associate Dean for Research, Office of Grants and Contracts, and various other ColoradoSPH administrative personnel as well as CU organizational units regarding such matters for their assigned departments. 

Additionally, this person will be primarily responsible for assigned pre- and post-award grant processes for both the Center for Health, Work and Environment, and the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. It should be noted that this position supports 2 units within the Colorado School of Public Health. These 2 units often operate differently due to the nature of Centers vs Departments, and as such, may have differing policies and procedures, financial models, and in general day to day operations.

This position is a very customer service-oriented position. The ideal candidate will have a can-do attitude, and patience to support requests and questions. This person will be expected to establish rapport and relationships through effective communication, both written and verbal.

This position is also part of a collaborative team and is expected to work well within a team dynamic, while working individually on specific tasks and projects. The ideal candidate will be supportive and provide backup to the other team members as needed. They should be self-motivated, eager to learn, and interested in engaging with the team on a regular basis.

Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including financial, administrative, and academic, and a demonstrated ability in prioritizing and meeting deadlines.

This position may be filled at the entry through senior level, depending on the successful candidate’s education, experience and demonstrated ability.

Examples of Work Performed

Grants/Contracts – Pre-award

    Develop and manage new applications for all facultyCoordinate routing and approval process for each proposal including timeline developmentCreate budgets, assist with budget justifications; prepare supporting documentation for grant applications (financial interest disclosures, biosketches, other support documents, and other pieces as necessary)Coordinate with any subcontract institutions to collect required proposal documentation and budgetsReview grant-related materials to ensure compliance with university and sponsor requirements; coordinate pre-award grant activities with partner institutions; coordinate pre-award grant activities within UCDStudy and understand RFA/PA and sponsor instructions to ensure proposal follows guidelinesSubmit proposal by deadline, and track proposal number and statusServe as a resource to faculty for interpreting proposal application guidelines including required materials, budget rules
Grants/Contracts – Post-award

    Develop and manage progress reports, no-cost extension requests, carry-over requests and contract applications for Center and Department facultyCreate budgets, assist with budget justifications; prepare supporting documentation for non-competing renewal applications Communication liaison between Grants and Contracts, Award Agency and departmental personnel. Problem solve in matters related to post-award situationsProvide/coordinate periodic training to CSPH staff and faculty and offer ongoing consultation in areas specific to research supportAdvise and consult with Principal Investigators and staff regarding federal or institutional changes in research policies and implementation of related proceduresReview and reconcile award notices, work with Principal Investigator in revising the budget as required and coordinate the setup of award in the University systems. Monitor all assigned grants by preparing reports and projections on a recurring basis and reviewing to ensure all expenditures are allowableCoordinate and monitor subcontracts and associated paymentsAs needed prepare or verify that OGC has submitted invoices accurately and in a timely mannerAs needed prepare and submit correcting journal entries and budget revisions for assigned grantsAdvise and consult with assigned Principal Investigators regarding matters related to their specific project budgets, ensuring they fully understand the funds available, projections and re-budgeting needs as project scope and timelines change, including changes in personnel  Work closely with assigned Principal Investigators to ensure that research staff and faculty effort is properly assigned and accounted for in accordance with study, university, and sponsor requirementsCoordinate with Office of Grants and Contracts on closeout financials and reporting

Business Administration and Analysis

    In coordination with Assoc. Dir. of Bus. Svcs. And other leadership as appropriate, review and revise business processes as needed to improve productivity or effectiveness while allowing for growth and organizational change. Represent Business Services team at meetings to gather information about the “academic businesses” and provide guidance and suggestions to Assoc. Dir. of Bus. Svcs. based on analysis of business trends.
Business Administration Management

    Participate in strategic planning activities related to the CHWE enterpriseProvide/coordinate periodic training to staff and faculty and offer ongoing consultation in areas specific to research supportAct as a team player to complete any tasks as assigned, especially during times with heavy workload, upcoming deadlines, or short-staff situations.
Policy and Procedural Development

    Attend the Colorado SPH Administrative and Professional Development meetings to represent the Center (CHWE) and Department (EOH) in development and implementation of ColoradoSPH policies and procedures.Review Center and Department internal procedures to provide suggestions in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness and help implement changes by providing training and guidance.

Minimum Requirements

    A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of 1 year of professional grant/contract experience.
Substitution for all levels: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

The position requires extensive, diverse, and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for supporting multi-disciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field. A Master’s degree will be considered in determining appropriate level, along with relevant grant/contract experience.Professional level management experience within a complex health-related research setting, with a preference for an environment that receives federal grants and contracts, like that in a Health Sciences Center.Familiar with CU procurement and accounting software such as Concur and Marketplace systemsUnderstanding of contract and administrative laws, including compliance regulations.Experience with various types of funding and accounts including grants, contracts, gifts, endowments, state funding, indirect cost recovery, consulting revenue, auxiliaries, and service centers.

    Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. Demonstrated ability to self-manage priorities and be proactive in resolving issuesAbility to evaluate, analyze, and interpret financial data, identify potential problems, recommend solutions, and implement preferred courses of action Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.Outstanding customer service skills.Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion. Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this 100% full-time position has been established at $59,000-$70,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation at the time of posting. The salary for the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, career field, education, and area of expertise.
