    Adjunct Professor of Keyboard Improvisation

    STARTING DATE: August 2022

WAGE: Pay is based on a variable hourly wage for music adjunct faculty

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach pop/commercial/jazz applied studio piano/keyboard (students will be mostly Commercial Music majors, but also may include music minors or non-majors). The instructor must be capable of successfully working with a wide range of musicians and musical goals, from performance majors to non-majors. In a given semester, students taking 1 credit typically take fifteen 28-minute lessons, ten 40-minute lessons or for those taking 2 credits, 14 one-hour lessons. The hourly wage includes preparation time, private lesson teaching, attendance at juries each semester (including some from other instruments), a department meeting, attendance at senior recitals, recruitment, and other special projects by arrangement.

QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree or doctorate is preferred. A bachelor's degree will be considered for those candidates that bring a considerable amount of professional experience. Teaching experience at the college level is desired. The candidate must be active as a performer, and encourage prospective students to apply for music scholarships at Concordia Irvine. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and be able to communicate effectively in English. In accordance with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and with the university's status as a church-operated institution, all adjunct faculty members must be practicing Christians, active at a Christian church.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Concordia University Irvine offers an excellent liberal arts education in the Lutheran tradition for approximately 4000 students, 1500 of whom are undergraduates. The Department of Music, with app. 60 music majors and 100 non-majors involved in performance ensembles, has app. 30 faculty members (full and part time). Music majors may earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music with optional concentrations in church music, music education, commercial music, composition, or performance. There is strong potential for significant growth in the coming years, as a new music building opened in 2019. Plans for an $11 million remodel of the CU Center for Worship and the Arts and a $6 million outdoor performance venue are underway. Music ensembles perform in Segerstrom Concert Hall for Christmas and other major halls on tours. An annual PBS Christmas special airs nationwide (one of the most widely-distributed collegiate Christmas specials on PBS). Concordia has a wind orchestra, symphony orchestra, jazz ensembles, chamber ensembles, Americana Ensemble, Commercial Music Ensemble, 4 choirs, 2 handbell groups, and several worship bands. Students may study any standard orchestral or church instrument with superior professional faculty performers.
