University business hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This position carries a campus wide impact and will have a typical administrative workload, with additional hours on evenings and weekends as needed to meet the needs of the University.

Position Summary:

The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Chancellor of UNC Asheville and serves as support staff to the Chancellor’s Senior Staff. The Chief of Staff directs the work of the Office of the Chancellor and coordinates and supports the meetings of the Board of Trustees, serves as the liaison between the University of North Carolina System Office and the Chancellor, serves as the point of contact for the various constituent groups served by the university, and provides coordination and leadership on administrative University matters. In collaboration with other members of the Chancellor’s Senior Staff, the Chief of Staff is responsible for planning, organizing, and guiding the initiatives and activities of the Chancellor as they relate to the internal operations and the external relationships of the University including strategic and financial matters.

The Chief of Staff is responsible for researching and providing appropriate and timely information to the Chancellor to facilitate efficient and effective decision-making, overseeing the implementation of inter-divisional initiatives, ensuring that issues have been vetted and that information has been adequately developed for the Chancellor to make decisions, and working closely with the Chancellor to establish priorities for the Chancellor’s time and attention. The Chief of Staff works in close collaboration with the Chancellor’s Executive Assistant on scheduling events, briefing Trustees, faculty and staff matters and coordinates Senior Staff meeting agendas.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Master’s degree. May also consider a Bachelor’s degree and equivalent 5-7 years of experience. Three to five years of senior executive leadership experience. Knowledge of higher education and experience in College or University. Highly effective written and verbal communication required, held a leadership role of increasing responsibility and prior supervisory experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

Five to seven years of progressive experience in executive-level roles within a large organization, preferably within an institution of higher education.

Experience in building trust-based relationships with senior leaders, faculty, staff, governing board members, elected officials, and community representatives.

Experience in working directly or indirectly with a governing board of an institution of higher education or non-profit organization.

An understanding of the distinction between governance and executive-level briefings and scheduling and priorities. Experience in managing or working with administrative support staff.

Background in the following is highly desirable: organizational planning and development, project management, policy development, and calendar and multiple constituency scheduling.

Candidates must possess (1) professional interpersonal skills and the ability to listen to alternative points of view and to recommend policies and solutions that are in the best long-term interest of the University; (2) the capacity for sound judgment, diplomacy, confidentiality and discretion; (3) the ability to maintain personal and professional confidences; (4) a strong sense of personal and professional integrity; and (5) the intelligence, flexibility, creativity, strong attention to detail, tolerance for ambiguity, and sense of humor to handle a high-profile fast-paced environment; (6) the ability to create and sustain strong working and professional relationships with campus leaders and the UNC System Chief of Staff, UNC Asheville faculty, staff, student, athlete and alumni leaders; (7) to foster and advance donor and constituent relationships with elected officials and friends and donors of the University. Superior skills in writing and oral communication, including editing for clarity and correctness, and the ability to convey complex ideas in a concise and comprehensible fashion under time-constrained conditions. Ability to analyze complex short and long term institutional and interpersonal situations, assess and develop alternative solutions, and to understand and utilize statistical data sources and forms of analysis common in higher education as necessary.
