The Department of Clinical Sciences at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, and providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government, and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board-certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the Veterinary Hospital (VH) is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, over 30,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state-of-the-art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from the CVM, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential Job Duties:

This position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the delivery of small animal primary care, the ability to teach veterinary students, and the ability to oversee daily service operations. The successful candidate will provide high quality first opinion medicine, general surgery, and general dentistry. Care provided is expected to be delivered in a manner consistent with the service’s emphasis on positive patient experience and low-stress animal handling. The candidate will be an integral part of the development of curriculum to support clinical training of day-one ready primary care clinicians. Teaching responsibilities will predominantly focus on the training and assessment of fourth year veterinary students in the clinical setting. Some didactic and laboratory teaching in topics related to primary care is expected.
The selected candidate for this position will have the following responsibilities:

  • Delivering instruction to fourth year DVM students during busy clinical rotations to include, but not limited to, clinical procedures, surgical and dentistry skills, and employing the use of low stress handling. Instruction to be delivered primarily in a clinical setting, with some didactic teaching.
  • Guiding the Small Animal Primary Care Clinical Rotation curriculum in collaboration with service faculty. Duties to include, but not limited to, management of the course website, curricular oversight to ensure the clinical experience aligns with the college’s curricular goals, and oversight of student assessments and grading.
  • Organizing and leading Small Animal Primary Care Service teams. Responsibilities to include, but are not limited to, organization of team meetings, creation of faculty’s clinical schedules, and communications with stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the coordination of support staff teams to ensure efficient and effective procurement of necessary resources to support clinical activities.
  • Ordering and helping to maintain controlled substances records in accordance with hospital, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serving as the service liaison with the hospital administration and external stakeholders.
  • Providing mentorship of individual DVM students.
  • Providing outreach programs and serving on College of Veterinary Medicine committees as time permits.
  • Engaging in scholarly activities including educational research.

Other Responsibilities:

Additional responsibilities will include leadership and management of daily activities of the service, such as management of the faculty’s clinical schedule, oversight of inventory, and direction of service operations.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • 3 years of clinical, dental and surgical experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent clinical skills.
  • Ability to supervise dental and surgical procedures performed by novice surgeons.
  • Ability to create a positive patient experiences and utilization of low-stress practices.
  • Interest in educational design and clinical skills training.
  • Excellent communication skills to include awareness of frameworks for effective communication and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a timely fashion.
  • Computer literacy: working knowledge of common word processing, spreadsheet and document editing platforms, as well as experience with electronic medical record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching and/or supervising DVM students in surgical, dental, and clinical skills settings.
  • Advanced degree (MS) or certificate credential in education.
  • ABVP certification in Small Animal Practice or interest in completing the certification process.

  • Must have or meet requirements for a North Carolina Faculty license or a North Carolina Veterinary license.
