Primary Purpose of Department:

The purpose of the Academic Advising Center within the University College is to support students who are exploring majors or transitioning between majors. Academic Advisors are responsible for assisting students in academic exploration, registration, navigating academic policies, and providing connections to on campus resources. Using a developmental advising model, Academic Advisors support the development of knowledge, skills, and personal accountability needed to explore academic and co-curricular options.

Primary Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Academic Advising, this position delivers holistic, inclusive, developmental, and student-centered academic advising to undergraduate students in the University College. The Academic Advisor plays a critical role in the educational journey of the undeclared student by supporting them with identifying interests, abilities, and academic goals, and with important decisions regarding their academic career.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

The essential job responsibilities of the Academic Advisor are to support undeclared and transitioning students to identify their academic strengths and establish plans of study based on degree requirements and the student’s academic and career goals. Advisors assist in identifying struggling or at-risk students; make appropriate referrals to on-campus resources; provide assistance with registration, add/drop, withdrawal; and major declaration. Advisors are responsible for maintaining detailed student records; participating in recruitment and retention initiatives; first-year and transfer orientations; departmental and committee meetings; development of relationships with campus partners; and instruction of one section of the First-Year Seminar course.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology, or other relevant fields
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience in advising, career development, or in a relevant higher education setting
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level
  • Experience working with various student populations
  • Experience with building partnerships and collaborating across departments
  • Able to manage multiple time-sensitive projects and initiatives
  • Commitment to personal learning and development
  • Experience in utilizing Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and student records systems (Banner, EAB, DegreeWorks)
