Position Description

Reporting to the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Student Athlete Services, the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Support is responsible to lead, plan and implement a comprehensive academic support program that fosters academic achievement, competitive excellence, persistence to graduation and fulfillment of the Seattle University mission of educating the whole person to professional formation.

Essential Functions:

  • In coordination with the Certifying Officer in the Office of the Registrar and as part of the certification team, ensure continuing eligibility of all student athletes and manage the squad list approval process for competition.
  • Lead, design and provide education for students, coaches and university staff regarding NCAA eligibility requirements.
  • Provide timely evaluations of transfer transcripts for admissions and to ensure eligibility including PTD.
  • Provide individualize academic mentoring to student athletes, designing specific programs for men's and women's basketball.
  • Collaborate with camps partners including Learning Assistance Program, the Advising Network, Disability Services, and others related offices to ensure that student athletes excel academically, maintain eligibility and are retained and persist to graduation.
  • Stay current on changes in NCAA legislation as it relates to eligibility and academic misconduct, and advise the Director of Athletics and the Faculty Athletics Representative on current trends and areas of concern.
  • Lead and coordinate meeting activities for the Athletics Advisory Board, quarterly. Also lead the Athletics care team.
  • Serve as primary administrator of Retain, and oversee communication to professors including but not limited to class miss, exam proctoring, accommodations, progress reports. Oversee coding of student athletes in Colleague and shepherd the priority registration process with students and coaches.
  • Supervise and support the professional development of the Assistant Director of Academic Support.
  • Other duties and special related projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experiencing providing academic advising and/or counseling support to student athletes at the four-year level, preferably NCAA Division I or Division II OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Successful candidate must have a knowledge of, and commitment to, NCAA rules and guidelines, with an emphasis on continuing and transfer eligibility.
  • All candidates must show a demonstrated commitment to the university’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Successful candidates must demonstrate a willingness to support and engage diversity, inclusion and gender equity as a central component of anti-racist athletics participation and Jesuit education of the whole person.
  • Must be able to exercise discretion and have sound professional judgement, as well as be able to collaborate with an array of people and campus departments.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the NCAA, the Western Athletic Conference, and other established bodies that govern or oversee intercollegiate athletics. In the event Employee becomes aware, or has reasonable cause to believe, that violations of these organizations’ constitutions, bylaws, rules or regulations may have taken place, Employee shall promptly report the same to the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Rules Education at the University. Employee shall cooperate fully and completely with any investigation of any alleged violation, whether such investigation is conducted by the University, NCAA or any other duly authorized agency or individual.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree and five years of experience experiencing providing academic advising and/or counseling support to student athletes at the four-year level, preferably NCAA Division I.
