Working under the regular guidance of more experienced advising staff, Associate Advisors provide academic support by working directly with students and records. The part-time Associate Advisor will advise students concerning academic progress, including course registration and planning, major selection, and academic standing, including probation. The Associate Advisor will help disseminate information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other related issues as they arise. The Associate Advisor will direct students to appropriate other advising staff and may participate in meetings to discuss academic and professional goals.  The Associate Advisor will help prepare and present student orientation sessions, and assist with course selections and registration activities. This position will be 20 hours per week. The actual schedule is flexible and will be set in consultation with the Advising Director.

The Associate Advisor directs students to resources within the University that provide assistance in making career/academic major choices, as appropriate.  The Associate Advisor provides access to information and resources for the achievement of academic, career, and personal goals and acts as an advocate and referral source, and provides consistent outreach and follow-up services.

The Associate Advisors occasionally represent the College at various related internal and external meetings and events. The Associate Advisors help to facilitate communication of the Vision, Mission, policies and procedures, and academic goals of the College and Temple University while assisting with their development and implementation.

Assists in developing activities and services provided to students within Tyler School of Art advising/counseling services. Works collegially with faculty, staff, and students to disseminate information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other related issues as they arise.  Meets regularly with assigned students to discuss academic and professional goals. Prepares and presents student orientation sessions, and assists with course selections and registration activities. Acts as an advocate and referral source and provides consistent outreach and follow-up services. Helps initiate and implement cross-functional student service initiatives.  Sometimes represents School/College at various related internal and external meetings and events.  Helps to position Tyler advising as highly respected and proactive. Facilitates communication of the Vision, Mission, policies and procedures, and academic goals of Tyler Temple University while assisting with their development and implementation. Assures advising is integrated with career planning. Assists in the daily administrative upkeep of the advising office and auxiliary projects for Tyler.

Required education and experience: Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of experience in an academic setting in higher education or related field preferred.  Advanced training and/ or coursework towards an advanced degree is preferred.  A combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience or background working with students in Visual Art and/or Design programs is preferred.

*Tyler supports hybrid work arrangements after the 6-month introductory period.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse group of faculty and administrators.
  • Strong management skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, along with the ability to be detail-oriented, able to multi-task efficiently in an office setting
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends
  • Experience with creating and using e-communications
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, Excel, and Banner
