Post Doc LYBIL Lab Manager

Location: ETREC Beneficial Insect Lab, 1752 Alcoa Hyw, Knoxville, TN

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is in search of a Post Doc to supervise, manage and perform the daily operations of the Lyndsay Young Beneficial Insects Laboratory with the focus of mass rearing of predators of the hemlock wooly adelgid, an invasive and deadly pest of the hemlock trees.  Field testing includes the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee National Forest, Cumberland Gap National Historic Park as well as other state forests, parks, natural areas, and wildlife management areas.

    Long-term maintenance of lab colonies of predatorsOverseeing reproduction (mating and oviposition) of predatorsCaring of newly emerged predatorsPreparing predators for field releasesCollecting adelgid-infested foliagePrepare reports and propose budgets for USDA FS as the sponsoring agencySupervise the work of 2 employees responsible for routine support in the laboratoryParticipate in outreach and educational activities
Requirements

    PhD Entomology, zoology, or other life sciences.  2 Years of research experience involving insect rearing. Valid Driver’s licenseAbility to hike off trailAdvanced knowledge of insect biology, including life cycles and stages. Ability to communicate effectively with lab team members and stakeholders.Ability to use a microscope, including to identify reared predators and related species. Knowledge, skills and abilities to use appropriate software (spreadsheets, word processing, presentation).Ability to identify and collect adelgid-infested foliage in the field.   Able to work independently
Preferred Qualifications

    PhD with study emphasis related to insect rearingExperience in rearing predators of the hemlock woolly adelgid is preferred.Ability to identify and modify predator rearing protocols in need of improvement. Knowledge of the basic concepts and procedures of statistical analysis.This is a full time regular position with full benefits dependent on available agency funding.
